Illinois nearly papered over its season-long frustrations with a terrific run at the Big Ten tournament. But when the 10th-seeded Illini dropped the conference title game by a 61-48 count to top-seeded Wisconsin -- closing out their bid to win four games in four days and qualify for the NCAA Tournament -- everyone could refocus on the team's body of work.

Considering the Illini set a school record for losses (19) and didn't make the NCAA Tournament for the first time in nine years, that body of work was one of the ugliest seen in Champaign-Urbana in a long while.

What didn't look right for the Illini? It's a long list.

--Seniors Brian Randle and Shaun Pruitt didn't lead like coach Bruce Weber hoped. Pruitt, a preseason all-Big Ten pick that wound up a third-teamer accordingly only to the media, even served a one-game suspension midway through the Big Ten slate as a collective punishment for a list of conduct unhelpful to the team.

--Junior Jamar Smith, the program's best shooter, had to sit out a redshirt year as part of his punishment for the one-car accident in February 2007 that sent teammate Brian Carlwell to the hospital for nearly a week -- and sent Smith to jail for two weeks for his felonious DUI.

--Without Smith on the floor, the Illini didn't have nearly enough good shooters and finished 10th in the league in 3-point accuracy (32.1 percent) and last in free-throw accuracy (61.0 percent).

--Without enough shooters, it became absurd how frequently Illinois built up halftime leads only to fritter them away because it didn't have anyone who create a basket when necessary.

--Almost everybody on the team got injured at least once. Junior Calvin Brock and freshmen Demetri McCamey and Mike Tisdale were the only Illini to appear in all 35 games. Freshmen Mike Davis and (walk-on) Jeff Jordan were the only other squad members who could have appeared in every game.

But to focus solely on the negative wouldn't be fair to a team that did win five of its seven games to build some momentum going into the offseason.

--Illinois found its new on-court leader in freshman point guard Demetri McCamey (8.2 ppg, 3.2 apg). Though he and Weber battled much of the season over his indifferent practice habits and lack of defensive desire, McCamey showcased highly prized abilities to get to the basket as well as to find open teammates with his clever passes. He also trotted out an improved 3-point touch as the season bumped along.

--Fellow freshmen Mike Davis and Mike Tisdale offered enough flashes to suggest they can be building blocks once they add at least 15 pounds of muscle. Both went from gaunt to slender during their rookie seasons, but they need more strength to hang in the Big Ten.

--Freshman shooting guard Alex Legion, a Top 40 recruit in the Class of 2007, transferred in from Kentucky during the semester break. He'll be eligible after first-semester grades are posted. When coupled with Smith, who'll be eligible to return in the fall, and top returning scorer Trent Meacham (10.1 ppg, 74 3-pointers), the Illini figure to have much more perimeter firepower next year. They'll also retain senior-to-be Chester Frazier to serve as the defensive sparkplug and senior swingman Calvin Brock to serve as the athletic leaper who can change games with his hustle.

That leaves Illinois to figure out ways to replace Pruitt (12.6 ppg, 7.3 rpg) and Randle (9.4 ppg, 5.5 rpg) in the frontcourt. The 7-foot-1 Tisdale figures to start at center, but Davis figures to battle incoming junior-college forward Dominique Keller for the starting power forward job. Or can redshirt freshman Rich Semrau, current freshman Bill Cole or incoming freshman Stan Simpson find a way to help?

If the Illini don't at least get back to the NCAA Tournament borderline, then fans will start howling even louder about Weber's job security. He bought himself some insurance this season with several big recruiting coups in the 2009 and 2010 classes. Now he needs to find more wins until the reinforcements arrive.

I thought I'd make an actual thread instead of my "Clemson. Amazing".

Thoughts:

This game showed what a vital asset Demetri McCamey is to the team.  He is undisputedly the team leader and it showed when he played in the second half.  It also showed (hopefully to McCamey) that the team can put up points without him doing everything.  He only

I am becoming increasingly frustrated. I didn't even see these 2 games and I am becoming agitated by the fact that nobody wants to step up for this team besides for the 2 Mike's and Demetri. I heard Alex Legion got the start, bad move Bruce.

I would've started Jeff Jordan. I hear he's been playing pretty well. He's been passing the ball well and penetrating into the lane.

But

Wow, I thought it was over. It's a 20 pt. lead, I go to take a #2 and I come back, it's an 11 pt. lead, and they just kept making the comeback.

That was almost as good as the comeback against Arizona in the Elite 8 in 2005. Wow. Tisdale played great, Mike Davis played great, Brandon Paul played great. And you could tell once McCamey was back playin in the 2nd half, it was a completely

Word on the street is that Bradley Beal is playing his recruitment extremely close to the vest.  Word is that he already knows where he is going to commit, however does not want to say just yet!  Beal appears to be not only a spectacular basketball player, but also a really great kid, who is concerned about having to give the other coaches the bad news!  I have heard that sources cl ...(more)

Wow.

I leave for a "relaxing" holiday with the inlaws, we drop a couple of close and disappointing games, and suddenly fans have written off the entire season, posts about how we can't get quality recruits, how we have nobody who can step up besides the juniors, how the juniors didn't put in enough work in the offseason...

All of this only a week after posts expe ...(more)

So will Brandon Paul the three point machine show up or will it be 0 for 5?  Will McCamey have a high point total or a high assist total?  Will Davis have a double double or just kind of run up and down the floor?  If the Illini are on their game, I'm not sure if there are too many teams that can beat them.  I think that they need to start early with the full court pressure and ...(more)

Things I like:

Offense is significantly more balanced than we have seen in 4 years.  We can score from almost any position on the floor, and have three or four players who can actually create their own shot, in McCamey, Richardson, Paul and Keller.  Plus, Davis and Tisdale are extremely efficient scorers when they get the ball in scoring position.

In addition to the

Tisdale had 18 points and shot 8-10, but a 7'0" presence needs more than five boards and one block. He needs to establish a presence on the block on offense as well.

Davis had half as many rebounds as he should've, and his six-shooter was firing blanks.

Richardson goes 1-5 and only has one rebound and no steals in 18 minutes. He needs to attack the rim and come up with a

I'm an optimist when it comes to the Illini, and it was a big blow to that optimism when they blew it against Utah.

But now after this loss to Bradley, it's obvious that Illinois is just a young, inexperienced team. Dmac is our proven leader, but he's slightly All-Big ten (2nd team), Mike Davis shows flashes of the star he can be, Keller has been solid, and Tisd

Mom supposedly liked Illinois and wanted him closer to home, but Beal loved Billy D. and he's very tight with Austin Rivers.

Unlike some other recruitments, Beal did his relatively drama free and with class. Good luck to him.

Up next: Chasson Randle and/or Devin Langford!

How great of a comeback was that? There was a thread that was started earlier about who would step up. I think it was clear who stepped up. The entire starting 5. Each and every one of them were huge this game. McCamey played the last 13 minutes with 4 fouls and didn't pick up the 5th. That was awesome. Jeff did a good job stepping in but there's no question we need McCamey in there to be good. IL ...(more)

Well congrats to Bradley for taking that one.

Anyone else not really feel so bad after that one?  Sure, there's another L on the record line, but that's about it.  The Illini definitely outplayed the Braves and it looks like the freshmen figured out how to play on the road midway through the second half.

The Braves really got some help on some turnover calls...

I sure hope the Braves and Utes are tournament teams.   Bradley just made sure they were the best team in IL.

I don't live in Illinois, I live in Florida.  I am forced to watch guys like Tim Tebow and I am not a Gator fan.  But I do get to see a guy will a huge heart and the will to win.

What is it with all of the talent in Cham
