Hoosiers report: Notes, quotes
--New coach Tom Crean received an eight-year contract to leave Marquette but has little remaining from last season's talented squad. Indiana agreed to pay $650,000 of Crean's contract buyout at Marquette. His contract could be worth as much as $18 million. In order to leave Indiana, Crean would have a $3 million contract buyout with the Hoosiers.
FINAL RECORD
25-7 overall, 14-4 in the Big Ten, third place.
WHAT WENT RIGHT
F D.J. White was the Big Ten Player of the Year in his senior season as he averaged 17.3 points and a conference-leading 10.3 rebounds. G Eric Gordon led the Big Ten in scoring with a 20.7 average and was the conference's Freshman of the Year.
WHAT WENT WRONG
Kelvin Sampson was forced to resign as coach in late February after being found to have violated NCAA rules regarding phone calls to recruits. Assistant coach Dan Dakich was given the job on an interim basis but led the Hoosiers to a 3-4 record, including losses to Minnesota in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten tournament and Arkansas in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. It was great to have G Armon Bassett at the point, averaging 11.5 points and 3.3 assists a game, but he was booted off the team by Dakich in April and his future is in some doubt.
QUOTE TO NOTE
"I'm going to look for people who understand why we wear the candy-striped pants and why we wear Indiana on our jerseys. It's going to take time." -- New coach Tom Crean at his introductory press conference.
