Jayhawks report: Getting inside

All season the scoring balance, the versatility and the capability to explode were virtues that made Kansas deserving of a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

But in a 75-68 overtime victory against Memphis for the national title, the Jayhawks also showed off their grit, determination and toughness.

Some of those characteristics can be traced to a players-only meeting the day after their last defeat, a one-point loss at Oklahoma State. Players gathered in the back corner of their favorite Lawrence restaurant and plotted a path to glory.

It wasn't the first time a team regrouped in such fashion. Usually, such discussions fail to deliver the goal intended. But the Jayhawks carried out their plan as their coach, Bill Self, produced a title in his first Final Four appearance, calmly exuding confidence when all looked bleak.

Kansas, which finished 37-3 after sharing the Big 12 title with Texas, saw a five-point halftime lead slip into a nine-point deficit late in the second half against Memphis. The Tigers were converting the drives for baskets, as well as wild bank shots, and seemed destined to become the first champion since 1979 from a conference that placed just one team in the NCAA Tournament.

But as much as Memphis loves to score off the dribble, it hates to tack on points standing still from the foul line. Misses there on four of its last five attempts in regulation gave Kansas the opening it needed to come back.

Junior guard Mario Chalmers capped the rally with what instantly became the most memorable shot in Kansas history, a 3-pointer out top with 2 seconds remaining to send the game into overtime.

From there, the Jayhawks took command and rode the momentum they established to the third national crown in their storied history. And to a man, they credited Self for continually spurring them on. The fifth-year coach is now due a hefty raise, and Self turned away from strong interest from his alma mater, Oklahoma State, to stay in Lawrence.

With Mario Little and Sherron Collins the only concrete choices to be leaving Kansas next year, that is 2 scholarships guranteed to be opening up for KU next year.  With fingers crossed and the hope that Cole Aldrich doesn't get hurt during the season, he is all but locked up as well to leave the draft next year, which would free up another scholarship to make it 3 available slots.&nb ...(more)

Harrison Barnes is something very special, and he will change any team he goes to for the better.  The three main teams competing for him are Kansas, Duke, and UNC.  I will give my take on each of these team's chances on getting this 5 star recruit.

Duke   No matter what anyone says, I continue to think that Duke is the front-runner for Barnes.

Wouldnt it have been nice if they would have mabe they Nov 17th games a round robin! You know winner of the first two games plays and losers play! I mean come on you get 4 good solid bball programs together and all your going to do is play 2 games? I think it would be a plus for this to have been set up better. In my opinion IT would be a great measuring stick for Uofl/ Ark / Memphis to play Kansa ...(more)

So Im watching teh game online here and its early but the team looks pretty fluid.

Xavier has one sweet shot. He hit a 3 on KUs second shot from the field and was just flawless in his stroke.

Here is my preseason Top 25.  Now some will point directly towards the ranking of UK and UNC, but IMHO they haven't done anything yet this preseason that leads me to believe that they should be "Annoited" a top 10 ranking just because.  With all the changes on their roster, I think they should have to earn it and work their way up.

About 2 weeks til tipoff with Hofstra, and I personally can't wait for this season.  I have not looked forward to a season this much since the '02-'03 season with Collison and Hinrich returning.  I love all the talk about how great John Wall is, it has allowed Xavier Henry to fly under the radar a little bit (outside of us KU fans) as possibly the top freshman in the country ...(more)

Alright so today Mr. Knight was supposed to visit Ku right.. i suppose its still the 31st so no one will know anything yet but as soon as anyone hears anything let us know. Brandon is a great player and the way Bill Self coaches i know he would be prepared for his future career. Kansas is a great basketball school and  he would love the atmoshere, and the national attention that Ku gets ...(more)

I have read a number of interviews with Self saying that he will probably redshirt a few guys.. Who do you guys think they will be? I personally believe that the two will be Elijah Johnson and Travis Releford...
