Jayhawks report: Getting inside

All season the scoring balance, the versatility and the capability to explode were virtues that made Kansas deserving of a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

But in a 75-68 overtime victory against Memphis for the national title, the Jayhawks also showed off their grit, determination and toughness.

Some of those characteristics can be traced to a players-only meeting the day after their last defeat, a one-point loss at Oklahoma State. Players gathered in the back corner of their favorite Lawrence restaurant and plotted a path to glory.

It wasn't the first time a team regrouped in such fashion. Usually, such discussions fail to deliver the goal intended. But the Jayhawks carried out their plan as their coach, Bill Self, produced a title in his first Final Four appearance, calmly exuding confidence when all looked bleak.

Kansas, which finished 37-3 after sharing the Big 12 title with Texas, saw a five-point halftime lead slip into a nine-point deficit late in the second half against Memphis. The Tigers were converting the drives for baskets, as well as wild bank shots, and seemed destined to become the first champion since 1979 from a conference that placed just one team in the NCAA Tournament.

But as much as Memphis loves to score off the dribble, it hates to tack on points standing still from the foul line. Misses there on four of its last five attempts in regulation gave Kansas the opening it needed to come back.

Junior guard Mario Chalmers capped the rally with what instantly became the most memorable shot in Kansas history, a 3-pointer out top with 2 seconds remaining to send the game into overtime.

From there, the Jayhawks took command and rode the momentum they established to the third national crown in their storied history. And to a man, they credited Self for continually spurring them on. The fifth-year coach is now due a hefty raise, and Self turned away from strong interest from his alma mater, Oklahoma State, to stay in Lawrence.

There has been a ton of talk recently about the lack of recruits signing with Kansas.  I am not as worried as some of you apprear to be.  There are still a TON of guys out there that are considering KU.  Here is a list from rivals and some notes about each:

I thought it was only fitting to start a thread in anticipation of the Feb 8th showdown between Kansas and Texas.  They may not be 1/2 in the polls when they meet in Feb. but there is no ...(more)

It is very early and with the exception of Memphis we have only faced athletes far inferior to our own but I thought it would be nice to look at where we are at this point.   I know long posts are tough to get through so I am going to paraphrase as much as possible.  In fact I'm not going to comment on each player, just a few items I have noticed.

The first name I would l

(POLL) Looking at the remaining pre-conference schedule... not much I am nervous about.  Sure, playing at UCLA is rough (yes, I know they lost to Portland by almost 30)... Michigan and Cal are not as good as we all thought going into the season... looking at the Big XII, there are a couple teams playing really well, Texas will give us a fight... OU is better than their record.  A&M is much ...(more)

After watching a few games this year, and I know its early, I think there is about 4 teams that could really challenge KU for the National title.

Mich. St.    -  Obviously
Syracuse   -   A lot of talent and they will be tested
Texas      -   This roster looks like an all-star team
UK&nbs

I know a lot of people are concerned about the Chemistry of KU, but I am not concerned at all.  Like any team KU' team has it's obstacles and growing pains that need to go through.  After the game against Memphis I posted some observations on Kusports.com that I thought needed fixing.  Here are my thoughts, but in the long-run I think they will all be addressed.

According to www.rivals.com Josh is seriously looking at Kansas.  His mother recently contacted Coach Self about her son attending KU.  While Josh is considered a "Nike" guy, he is willing to look at Kansas as an option.  Josh recently decided not to attend the University of Tennessee, many believe it's because they are an Adi ...(more)

Wow!  The Kansas talk was good but Florida was there too.   This is pretty disappointing for me, worse than Barnes.  I really felt good about this kid coming here.

I know its Tennessee Tech tonight and Oakland the other night, but these guys are fun to watch. Already an unselfish team. They're passing better. Moving the ball like Self wants. Yeah there's lapses from time to time. But they're getting steals. Some great alley oops. Hitting some threes. The Morris twins are both much improved. Xavier looks like the real deal. Getting the high low tonight. Yeah ...(more)

My oberservations from last nights game.

1) Did anybody see MSU lose to Florida last night?  I actually have no problem with MSU as I am a Tom Izzo fan, but it sure does seem like that MSU faithful feel like they should be "Owed" something with their negative comments towards KU.  Oh well, they have been banged up with some injuries, but I knew MSU was kind of lookin

This is great news for KU fans as one of the two top point guards in the country, Josh Selby, will be visiting Late Night in the Phog this Friday night.  I am pumped!  Maybe, just maybe, Selby will commit after this event.  Self has a very good track record of getting recruits to commit after this event.  FANS: SHOW SOME LOVE FOR ALL THE RECRUITS!  THIS IS A HUGE YEAR I ...(more)

Hey Everyone....I just wanted to comment on what, for me, has been the most pleasant surprise of the young season thus far. The Morris Twins. And I saw a post earlier that I believe was from Shoe Shine Boy about how the twins should not be classified as the same player, and he is right, but I have seen the same improvemements in each of them so I will lump them together in this post. Sorry!!

I know we haven't seen Morningstar yet but based on who's played so far, which returning player is the most improved?  I've posted my pick in other threads but I'll withhold it for this post so as not to bias your vote Smile if I could anyway.
