Jayhawks report: Notes, quotes

Notes, quotes · Getting inside · Strategy and personnel

--The 36 unanswered points Kansas scored in the first half of its 98-31 romp against Alcorn State on Dec. 2 was the second biggest run in Division I history. The record of 37 straight was set by Utah State in a 2006 game against Idaho. The 31-point total was the fewest points allowed a visitor in Allen Fieldhouse and the fewest at home since Idaho netted 28 in a 1946 game in Hoch Auditorium.

--Convincing G Elijah Johnson to shoot the ball could be a challenge. The freshman is content distributing assists, and even had nine to go with no points against Alcorn State. He did miss four field-goal attempts. "Coach wanted me to be aggressive, to shoot," Johnson said. "I didn't want to make him mad."

KEY EARLY-SEASON CONFERENCE GAME: at Iowa State, Jan. 23 - This is the fourth conference game for the Jayhawks, who should be sitting 3-0 in the Big 12 after starting with Nebraska, Texas Tech and Baylor. The Cyclones figure to be another victim, but the matchup is intriguing since F Craig Brackins netted 42 points against Kansas in last year's game in Ames. It was a breakthrough performance that gained the attention of NBA scouts, though Brackins opted to return for his junior season.

LAST YEAR'S CONFERENCE RECORD: 14-2, first place in Big 12.

QUOTE TO NOTE
"Our guys haven't really labored under pressure, and the one game we did (against Memphis), we didn't look great." - Kansas coach Bill Self.
