--Junior F Eugene Phelps doesn't garner as much attention as some of his teammates, but he has been a major player for the 49ers this season. Phelps had 17 points and 11 rebounds against UC Irvine on Jan. 22. He had eight points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots in a 67-66 victory over Pacific on Jan. 26, a win that may make the 49ers very hard to catch in the Big West Conference standings. He followed that performance with 12 points, 12 rebounds and two blocked shots in a 75-60 victory over Cal State Fullerton on Jan. 29. Phelps was averaging 10.9 points and 6.8 rebounds through Jan. 30, up from 8.1 points and 5.3 rebounds last season.
--Senior G Brandon Nevens watched and waited for three long years, but he finally is getting an opportunity to play for the 49ers. Nevens redshirted the 2007-08 season after transferring to Long Beach State from Cal State Bakersfield. A serious medical condition forced him to miss the next two seasons. He played only once in this season's first 19 games, but he appeared in his fourth consecutive game against Cal State Fullerton on Jan. 29. Nevens scored his first points at the free-throw line against UC Irvine on Jan. 22, made his first field goal against Pacific on Jan. 26 and made both of his field-goal attempts to finish with four points against Cal State Fullerton.
--Junior PG Casper Ware needed seven more assists, as of Jan. 31, to pass Ed Ratleff (1970-73) for fifth all-time at Long Beach State. Ware had 404 career assists, including 123 this season. Billy Walker (1984-88) holds the school record with 507 career assists. Ratleff holds the single-season record with 189.
--Senior G Greg Plater struggled with his shot against Pacific on Jan. 26 and Long Beach State on Jan. 29 after averaging 17.7 points on 18-of-37 shooting (.486) in the three previous games. Plater was held to five points on 2-of-11 shooting (.181) against the Tigers. He had six points on 2-of-11 shooting against the 49ers.
