Terrapins report: Strategy and personnel
THE GOOD NEWS
Greivis Vasquez, the team's leading scorer, and Eric Hayes still have two years of eligibility left, and Sean Mosley can challenge for a starting job in the backcourt if Maryland uses three guards. Gus Gilchrist, who transferred in December, becomes eligible in January and could immediately become the Terps' best post player.
THE BAD NEWS
James Gist was the most athletic player on the team and Bambale Osby was the strongest. Together, they were the top two rebounders and now both are gone. Leadership could continue to be a problem too, since little-used Dave Neal will be the only senior on the team.
KEY RETURNEES
Vasquez led the Terps in scoring at 17.0 points per game, but he needs to work on his temperament on the court. Eric Hayes returns after averaging 9.9 points and 4.5 rebounds. Gus Gilchrist, a 6-foot-9, 230-pound forward, is eligible in January after transferring from Virginia Tech. He should help offset the losses of Gist and Osby.
ROSTER REPORT
--Greivis Vasquez finished fourth in the conference with his 17.2 points-per-game average. He was named second-team All-ACC as a sophomore.
--James Gist closed his career eighth in the league in scoring (15.7 ppg) and fifth in rebounding (7.8). He was also named to the ACC's second team.
--Perhaps Maryland wore down late in games because the key players were overworked. Vasquez, Gist and Eric Hayes all ranked in the top 12 in the ACC in minutes per game, with all three averaging at least 32. Vasquez was second in the league in minutes played at 36.9, followed by Hayes (eighth, 33.6) and Gist (12th, 31.8).
