Terrapins report: Notes, quotes
--The irony of Maryland's horrible 15-of-28 performance at the free throw line in the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament was that the Terrapins had turned around their poor performance at the stripe in the second half of the season. In fact, over the previous seven games, the Terps had hit 129-of-164 free throws, 78.7 percent.
--Sophomore C Jordan Williams was selected Third Team All-American by Yahoo! Sports and FoxSports.com this week. His double-double Thursday against N.C. State was the first for a Terrapin in the ACC Tournament since 2005, when Nik Caner-Medley had one against Clemson. Williams added another with 16 points and 16 rebounds against Duke in the quarterfinals.
--Freshman G Terrell Stoglin's six points against Duke represented his lowest offensive output in 10 games. Stoglin was 2-of-10 from the field and couldn't find that fine line between getting the Maryland running game going and forcing the action. He had five turnovers, his most in 12 games.
--Senior G Cliff Tucker had 12 points and five rebounds in the quarterfinal, his first double figure scoring effort in seven games, and his best rebounding showing in 11 games.
--Freshman G Pe'Shon Howard came off the bench to score 10 points on 3-of-3 shooting from the field. He was 3-of-4 at the line and hit his only 3-pointer. Howard had only four double-figure scoring games during the regular season.
--The 19th victory of the season for Maryland meant that the Terrapins have now had at least that many wins in 15 consecutive seasons. They last failed to reach that plateau in 1995-96 with a 17-13 mark for a team that ironically reached the NCAA Tournament.
--The Terrapins advanced in the ACC Tournament for just the third time in their last seven tournament visits since they won the 2004 title. No team has won four straight games to claim the crown since the ACC expanded in 2005.
--Freshman G Terrell Stoglin had nine points for the second straight game, and added three assists and just three turnovers in 28 minutes. Prior to the last two games, Stoglin had scored 20-or-more points in four of the previous five games. He did speed the tempo against State, helping keep Maryland in control all night.
QUOTE TO NOTE
"We played one of the toughest schedules in the country regardless. We've been in every game. We have one of the best coaches in the country, hands down, who (has) won the tournament. We have one of the best players in the country, hands down. I think Terrell (Stoglin) is one of the top freshmen. So we've got the players to do it. -- Freshman guard Pe'Shon Howard, on the Terrapins' chances of winning the ACC tournament.
