Notre Dame has got to get shooting guard Kyle McAlarney unwound from 3-point range. McAlarney had hit only 17 of his last 53 3-point field-goal tries through the Pitt game, which is about 30 percent for a shooter who was up as high as 44 percent earlier in the season.

PLAYER ROTATION
Usual starters -- F Zach Hillesland, F Luke Harangody, G Kyle McAlarney, G Tory Jackson, G Ryan Ayers. Key subs -- F Luke Zeller, G Jonathan Peoples, F Tyrone Nash.

GAME REVIEW

Connecticut 69, Notre Dame 61

Marquette 71, Notre Dame 64

Pittsburgh 93, Notre Dame 80

Cincinnati 93, Notre Dame 83

GAME PREVIEW

at UCLA, Saturday, Feb. 7

vs. Louisville, Thursday, Feb. 12

vs. South Florida, Sunday, Feb. 15

IN FOCUS
Life in the Big East gets a little easier for Notre Dame in the upcoming future, although they probably don't need a trip to the West Coast for a nonconference, nationally televised game against UCLA before coming home to entertain Louisville in a crucial game for the Irish. Notre Dame's national prestige has fallen greatly during a five-game losing streak to nationally ranked teams and only finding a win or two against top-line teams will bring it back, along with a decent seed in the NCAA Tournament. To beat Louisville, the Irish must beat the Cards' pressure defense and put pressure inside on freshman C Samardo Samuels with Luke Harangody.

ROSTER REPORT

--F Luke Harangody had his 11th straight double-double as he finished with 28 points and 14 rebounds. He has also scored in double figures in 14 consecutive games.

--F Zach Hillesland returned to the starting lineup and finished with 11 points and five rebounds. Hillesland had come off the bench in the previous two games after starting the first 18 games this season. He has scored a combined 23 points in the last two games after scoring 19 in the previous six games.

--G Jonathan Peoples failed to score in 13 minutes as he returned to the bench after starting the previous two games.

--Coach Mike Brey shook up his starting lineup against Marquette and Pitt, starting F Luke Zeller and G Jonathan Peoples in place of F Zach Hillesland and G Ryan Ayers. Zeller responded big time, hitting three of five against Marquette for eight points and scoring 18 points against Pitt on 6-for-9 shooting, all from 3-point range. Peoples scored eight against Marquette but had only three in 12 minutes against Pitt. Neither Hillesland nor Ayers scored against Marquette but the two reached double figures against Pitt, Hillesland with 12 points and Ayers with 10.

As this year's Irish squad fights through the Big East schedule, the upcoming 3 games are critical.  Everyone points to the big games, the marquees, road trips at Nova and UConn, and top ten matchups.  Yes, those are great opportunities.  But, as we learned last year with an 8-10 league finish, it's the winnable games that you HAVE to get.  We've just completed a rough stretch ...(more)

ND continues to try to take it to the basket weakly against shot blockers and get it rejected 99% of the time. Dejuan Blair showed us how to take it strong to the basket against 7 footers like Thabeet last year and he is only 6'6" tall. You have to keep them off-balance by keeping your body on them and not let them get their feet set so they can elevate and stretch out to get a paw on th ...(more)

I like the teams effort but they continue to get man handled on the boards. Ben H is ok but he doesn't have much ability. He doen't make mistakes but he doesn't create a whole lot either. Scott is too weak to go up against most of the big men in the Big East. Here is who I would start. This probably wouldn't help. Brey really needs to recruit some rebounders.

If the irish want to be considered for an at-large bid this year they need to at least get a split this week. A win at Rutgers would help them get to that 20 win plateau which would go a long way to securing a bid. A win at Villanova would be fantastic but unlikely. The irish only need 5 more wins to get to 20 for the season and I think that would keep them from having to settle for a&n ...(more)

I guess today against Cincy Luke felt he was the only one who should be shooting. When he left in the second half around the 5 minute mark we came down and moved the ball and scored on both possesions. Whenever Harangody gets the ball he thinks one thing, SHOOT!!!  He would be so much more dynamic if he would ever pass out of the double and triple teams, but he constantly tries to get the sho ...(more)

Coach, what are you doing to your players? Didn't we learn anything from last year? This is how you blow 22 point leads. WVU played 11 guys and we played 7. I refuse to believe we cannot sub 4 or 5 guys at some point off the bench during a game even without Carleton Scott. These freshmen have contributed when asked as well as others. Don't make these young men so tired at the end of the game that ...(more)

Any win on the road in the big east is a good win. Also this was the 1st true road win as the chicago tourney against St. Louis was a neutral court site. Big 3 game stretch coming up and we will get a good guage of where we stand against the upper echelon of the conference. Could be a make or break portion of the schedule in terms of team confidence.

Notre Dame, you should not be proud of tonights effort, when your team shoots like 24 foul shots compared to WVU's 4, what a joke of a game.  Can't wait to see this team on our court and only hope that you get treated the same.  Pitiful and everything that is wrong with college sports today.

Just curious  on how good a team people think the Irish are. I actually thought they would be undefeated at this point, but they have looked Sluggish at times and haven'e put away some of the weak teams they have played. Gody is one of the best and Hanbrough has looked good for the most part, but i thought we'd see more out of T Jackson. They'll really need to step it up when Conference play ...(more)

Tory is a good ball handler but he should not be allowed to shoot the rest of the year.  The Irish have scorers and he is not one of them.  Let anyone else shoot.  Over four years he has proven he is not a shooter.  Keep passing Tory and the team could be good.  His shots will keep losing games.

looking at their pre-Big East schedule, the Irish absolutley must be 10-0 when UCLA visits South Bend Dec. 19.otherwise, it's going to be a struggle getting back to the tournament...

As a Notre Dame fan, I'm excited about Luke coming back.  As a bsketball fan, I can't understand the lack of interest by NBA teams.  The guy has performed against good talent in the Big East and more than held his own against the likes of Thabeet and Blair.  I look at the mock drafts and see guys like Heytveldt and no Harangody.  Luke can eat Heytveldt's lunch!  Come on ...(more)
