Buckeyes report: Getting inside

Ohio State hopes to use a fine finish to its 2007-08 season as a springboard for 2008-09.

Snubbed by the NCAA Tournament selection committee, the Buckeyes went on to win the NIT by ripping off five straight wins, including a 92-85 win over Massachusetts in the championship game. In all, Ohio State won seven of its last eight games to finish 24-13.

Ohio State won 24 games despite having only one starter and four players back from a team that lost to Florida in the NCAA final last season. However, the Buckeyes should have plenty of experience going into next season -- point guard Jamar Butler and forward Othello Hunter were their only senior starters.

Center Kosta Koufos had a solid freshman season and came on strong at the end as he was named the NIT's Most Outstanding Player. He averaged 14.5 points and 6.6 rebounds but surprised some by entering his name in the NBA draft. Without hiring an agent, which Koufos said he wouldn't likely do, he's eligible to return to OSU next season.

Without Koufos, the Buckeyes would take on a different look and again lean heavily on incoming freshmen. Ohio State will have two starting guards returning next season in sophomore David Lighty and freshman Evan Turner. Lighty averaged 9.0 points and Turner scored 8.1 per game.

Freshman guard Jon Diebler began the season in the starting lineup before going into a shooting slump but bounced back to average 6.0 points. He, too, will add depth in the backcourt.

Got a question about Lighty. I know he was a part of the 2006 recruiting class and has played in all 4 seasons but according to cbs he is listed as a junior. Was he medically red shirted last year due to his injury and lack of games played? Just wondering cause Im always thinking ahead and he is a big piece of the puzzle for OSU in 2010. Odds are that turner leaves after this year and there is a s ...(more)

OSU just announced that Walter Offutt is transferring.  It was not reported to where he will transfer.  He will finish the quarter at OSU.

This clears up a scholarship/roster spot that would allow all the current players on the team to stay next year while still having enough room for the 6 incoming freshmen.

Hey, sorry to "troll" over to your team page but I had to give you all props.  Your Buckeyes looked pretty impressive tonight against the Tar Heels.  I know you all hate the final score, but the veteran leadership Ohio State has will take them very far this year.  ...The most impressive thing was coming back down 19 (against the defending champs) to make it a last 10 secon ...(more)

buckeye basketball this year has withot any doubt in my mind the strongest backcourt/wingman play to walk into value city arena in a long time. The question is  having dallas injured for the begging of the year can we match up inside well enough to beat unc fsu butler

I saw an article that said Matta was going to run some man defense this year.  It's about freakin' time.  The matchup zone was alright in 07-08, but as teams got more used to it they really started to take advantage last year.  It will be good to see the Bucks running some different looks on D this season - if nothing else, just to make the opponent change things up once in a while. ...(more)
