Sooners report: Getting inside

Oklahoma talked a good game before playing Louisville, then got off to a decent start when guard David Godbold hit three 3-pointers at the outset.

But the Sooners, after noting how an upset in the second round of the NCAA Tournament could shape the program under second-year coach Jeff Capel, suffered a 78-48 loss and finished 23-12.

"Getting to the Sweet 16 is big-time for any program, but I think it would be magnified for this program," said Taylor Griffin, a junior forward. "We're kind of coming back into our own after all the stuff that's happened over the years."

A complete comeback will require some additional time. The stuff Griffin alluded to was the NCAA sanctions levied against Oklahoma for illegal phone calls to recruits made by former coach Kelvin Sampson, who also couldn't keep his fingers from doing the walking at Indiana.

Jeff Capel was left to pick up the pieces at Oklahoma and did a nice job in his second season, guiding the Sooners to a fourth-place finish in the Big 12 as they garnered the No. 6 seed in the East Region.

An extended run, however, required a second-round upset, and the Sooners weren't up to that challenge, falling behind Lousville by 20 at halftime. With the departure of Godbold and center Longar Longar, the Sooners must replace two starters, though Capel has demonstrated some savvy on the recruiting trail, especially after landing home-state standout Blake Griffin, the younger brother of Taylor.

The NBA, however, could beckon for Griffin, who injured both knees during the season but was still an All-Big 12 pick capable of taking over games with his toughness underneath.

OK, today was a very very bad day (to say the least) for all us Sooner fans.   After the loss to TT in football, I was hoping for a consolation big win on the court for us.  I could not believe the performance of our basketball team at VCU.
Since Capel has been at OU he has had a free ride....BG made the last two years for us.  Capel was just "along for the ri

Just like your football team this season, you guys cannot seem to defeat a decent team.  VCU and USD have both hammered you by 13 and 12 points respectively.  Looks like one team is missing their star player a little bit.  These last two games pretty much show that Jeff Capel is the most overrated coach of the most overrated team in America.  He rode Blake Griffin to a good sea ...(more)

Great Alaska Shootout has been around since 1978 and was one of a few in-season tournaments at the time. Now it kinda gets lost in the mix of all the holiday tournaments. 2009 GAS is a round-robin pool play type tournament. In pool play, everyone could possilby finish 1-1. Then tiebreakers are based on things such as points scored and points allowed. I prefer the elimination-style bracke ...(more)

The basketball team, to me, is even more disappointing than the football team. Football had injuries. Basketball is loaded with healthy "McDonalds All-Americans."

Hey Sooner fans...  Just got done watching VCU smoke OU.......  You may hve thought that this was going to be a sure victory, but let it be known that this was a sure loss from the get go....  You do not go to VCU and win..... Keep your heads up, your boys will be fine...  But let it be known to all the Big12 schools...  You do not come to VCU and expect to win....  ...(more)
