Sooners report: Notes, quotes
--The dismissal of fifth-year coach Jeff Capel will cost Oklahoma approximately $2.1 million as part of the buyout agreement built into a contract valued at more than $13 million. Capel received an extension following the Sooners' run to the Elite Eight in 2009 and had five years remaining on his deal. There is a possibility Oklahoma could prove "cause" in Capel's firing because of an NCAA investigation into allegations of improper payments to former player Tiny Gallon.
--Longtime Oklahoma play-by-play announcer Bob Barry will not be returning for another season. Barry ended a 50-year radio career by calling the Sooners' last game, a quarterfinal loss to Texas in the Big 12 Tournament. He was recognized by the public address announcer at Kansas City's Sprint Center and presented a game ball by the Oklahoma coaching staff.
FINAL RECORD
14-18, 5-11, tied for 10th in the Big 12.
2010-11 SEASON RECAP: Oklahoma continued to play a brutal nonconference schedule, which was arranged for the kind of talent Jeff Capel brought in prior to last season. His high-profile recruits, G Willie Warren, C Tiny Gallon and G Tommy Mason-Griffin, all departed, leaving the Sooners with little chance of matching up against stronger teams. All three of the players were labeled as malcontents, so they weren't altogether missed, but a role player, G Cade Davis, was forced to step up and become Oklahoma's leader. Davis handled the obligation as well as possible, averaging a team-best 14.2 points, but the Sooners were simply outmatched across the board.
QUOTE TO NOTE
"We didn't win as many games as we wanted but we built a lot of confidence. We just need to keep building and we can be very good next year, especially when we have some new guys coming in." -- Oklahoma F Andrew Fitzgerald.
