Ducks report: Getting inside

Getting inside · Notes, quotes · Strategy and personnel

Oregon will need to win at UCLA on Saturday to avoid matching the school's worst Pac-10 record in its previous 30 seasons in the conference.

Oregon is 2-15 entering Saturday's game. The worst previous record for the Ducks since the league expanded to 10 teams and an 18-game schedule was 2-16 in the 1991-92 season. The problem is that UCLA still has incentive -- a victory could give the Bruins a Pac-10 co-championship.

It's not a good matchup for the Ducks. They're the worst team in the Pac-10 in field goal percentage defense, and they're up against the Bruins, who began the week leading the nation in shooting percentage. Past Oregon teams might have hoped to outscore the Bruins, but this Oregon team is the worst shooting team of Ernie Kent's 12 seasons and can't keep up offensively.

Oregon's 21 overall losses are tied for second in school history with coach Don Monson's teams in 1988-89 (8-21) and '91-92 (6-21) and Steve Belko's first season, 1956-57 (4-21). The school record for defeats was set in the 7-24 season of 1921-22.

What isn't in question on Saturday is where the Ducks finish in the Pac-10 or when they will play in the Pac-10 tournament. Oregon is assured of placing 10th, which puts the Ducks in the 8:30 p.m. game on Wednesday in the first round of the league tournament. The opponent is in doubt, dependent on results of other Saturday games, and could be Arizona, USC, Washington State or Oregon State. The Ducks have been swept by Arizona, USC and WSU and split with the Beavers.

USC 80, OREGON 66: Oregon ran out of rallies against the Trojans in losing to USC for the fourth consecutive time. The Ducks trailed by 12 points in the first half but got back to 38-38 just before halftime. The Ducks were down 13 points in the second half but fought back within 64-62 before USC scored 12 consecutive points to put the win away.

It's a familiar scenario for the Ducks: falling behind and needing to battle back. They could pull it off in the previous two games in overtaking Stanford and USC, but the Trojans prevented it by shooting .583 from the field while Oregon finished at .373.
