Quakers report: Notes, quotes

Notes, quotes · Getting inside · Strategy and personnel

--Penn and Princeton have long been considered the Ivy League's perennial powers, having combined to win at least a share of 46 of the past 49 league championships and at least a share of every league title since 1989. Past history didn't mean much for a Princeton team with a 2-12 Ivy record this season, particularly when Penn closed out its regular season with a 64-48 victory at Princeton.

"We're happy with the win," Penn coach Glen Miller said. "It's difficult when you clinch the championship on Friday night to come out and play with a lot of intensity. And I think we did what we had to do tonight to win it."

--The Quakers enter their third consecutive NCAA Tournament having won 10 consecutive games, going back to a 77-68 loss at Yale on Feb. 3. Yale went on to push Penn for the league title, but the Quakers clinched the championship on March 2 by dominating Yale 86-58 at home.

"I think this is even sweeter as a senior," senior forward Mark Zoller said following the win over Yale. "We had a goal to come out and win this championship. We had that bull's-eye on our backs. There's still a lot of hard work to be done, but we came out and played like a championship team this evening."

--While Penn has been a productive offensive team, leading the Ivy League with 75.2 points per game and a .401 field-goal percentage, the Quakers don't need to let a first-round game come down to free throws. Penn entered the postseason ranked seventh in the Ivy league with a free-throw percentage of .658.

QUOTE TO NOTE
"It's the most exciting time of the year. I think we've been pretty good when we've had time to prepare for an opponent ... . We'll do some preliminary work, maybe pick eight teams and start to put together scouting reports with the hopes that we'll play one of them." -- Penn coach Glen Miller on the Quakers' NCAA Tournament plans.
