Quakers report: Strategy and personnel

Senior Ibrahim Jaaber continues to make an impressive adjustment to his new role as a point guard under a new coach. Soon after former coach Fran Dunphy left for Temple and former Brown coach Glen Miller took over at Penn, the Quakers lost starting guard guard David Whitehurst for the entire 2006-07 season for academic reasons. That thrust Jaaber into the unfamiliar role of running the offense from the point. Jaaber, the first two-time Ivy League player of the year since Penn's Ugonna Onyekwe in 2001-02 and 2002-03, finished second in the Ivy League with 15.9 points per game. He also finished third in the Ivy in field-goal percentage (.525) and first in assists (5.30 per game), assist-turnover ratio (1.81) and steals (3.00 per game). "I don't think I've played to my full capabilities," Jaaber said.

"I haven't been asked to be a scorer as much as I have in the past. But one thing I've gained from it is I've learned to pass the ball more and my assist average is up. And I've learned to keep my teammates in the game more."

GAME PREVIEW

TBD (NCAA Tournament)

KEYS
Penn brings plenty of postseason experience to its third consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. To finally get over the hump with a first-round win, the Quakers need Ibby Jaaber to make a big impact on both ends of the floor. They must also establish their inside-outside offensive balance as early as possible.

ROSTER REPORT

--For all the justifiable attention focused on Jaabar, it can be easy to forget about first-round all-Ivy League F Mark Zoller. Zoller led the Ivy League with 18.2 points per game and ranked second with 7.5 rebounds per game and a field-goal percentage of .566. With the Ivy League title on the line against Yale, Zoller responded with one of the best performances of his college career, scoring 22 points, grabbing 17 rebounds and adding six assists, four blocked shots and four steals. "Ibby does it on the defensive end, but on the offensive end, Zoller is a presence, and it's very difficult," Cornell coach Steve Donahue said recently.

"It starts with Jaaber. If he's not there, none of those other guys -- and this is no offense to them -- can defend the way they defend. As good as Ibby is, we have guys who can kind of stay in front of him. But when (Zoller) starts posting up, he just knows how to play, and he's so strong for this level. It's hard for us to deal with Mark, and I've talked to a lot of coaches and we all say that."

--The Quakers are more than just Zoller and Jaaber. Junior G Brian Grandieri brings balance to Jaaber's penetration and Zoller's inside presence with his 12 points per game and 50-percent shooting from 3-point range.

--It's been a tough season at times for senior F Stephen Danley, but Danley's experience has been evident down the stretch. Danley averages nine points and 4.8 rebounds per game and leads Penn with 28 blocked shots.
