Panthers report: Getting inside

This won't be the first time that naysayers have been betting against Jamie Dixon, and so far the seventh-year head coach has risen to every challenge. But there's no question that this may be his toughest job yet at the helm of the Panthers.

Dixon has to replace four starters, including his entire inside game of Sam Young, Tyrell Biggs and DeJuan Blair. Of his key returning players, one is still recovering from a broken foot and another has been suspended for the first semester.

Sound like fun? It might turn out that way by March, because there's no shortage of talented, if untested, players waiting for their shots.

Start in the backcourt, where Levance Fields' departure leaves a gaping hole. Fields seemed to have hung around campus forever, and his steadiness at the point will be hard to replace.

One option is Ashton Gibbs, the team's best long-distance shooter who has to crack the rotation somewhere. Also in the mix is veteran Brad Wanamaker and Centenary transfer Chase Adams, eligible immediately because his old school is on probation. The trio might get more playing time earlier in the season, since projected starting shooting guard Jermaine Dixon is out until late November with a broken foot and Gilbert Brown has been suspended for the first semester for academic reasons.

In the frontcourt, meanwhile, the best player may be a freshman. McDonald's All-American Dante Taylor could start right away in the paint, alongside Gary McGhee, who backed up Blair a year ago. Sophomore Nasir Robinson and freshmen Lamar Patterson and J.J. Richardson will also be in the mix.

The last time the Panthers were unranked to start the season was 2005-06. That team won its first 15 games and made the final of the Big East tournament. Jamie Dixon is hoping for similar luck this time around.

We just lost to Texas by 16 points. Overall, this was a very respectable showing against a premier team - Texas is for real. We really stuck with them for most of the game until they pulled away in the last 6-7 minutes.

But just imagine if Blair decided to stay (and if he was told he would be a mid-2nd round pick, he probably would have stayed). If he was in the lineup against Texa

Just heard that senior guard dixon is still not ready. He will be out another 2-3 weeks. The freak accident that broke a different bone in his right foot that he originally broke in july is still not healed. He had surgery in mid sept. This must be the longest time to come back from a broken foot. In total it will be 12+ weeks. The panthers could sure use him on defense and for their upcoming game ...(more)

Never since I've been a fan of Pitt have they lost in November (I started in the middle of the last season where they did)...but we have also never played a team as good as this Texas team in November.

Never have I seen a Pitt team (that I can recall) struggle this much to assert itself on the glass.

And never have I watched Pitt get beaten by 16 and come of feeling bette

Robinson is not that good; Taylor is a beast who needs minutes.

Tonight we played against a team with no player taller than 6'7.  Explain to me, then, why Taylor only attempted two shots (and got 5 points).  Robinson had 6 of our 13 turnovers, and Taylor had 4 blocks.  Heck, even Gary McGhee only attempted 3 shots.  By contrast, we chucked up 19 3 balls (and only m

I am hard pressed to say that I think Pitt has any chance tonight against a strong Texas team, but stranger things have happened.  Not much stranger but stranger (Pitt beating WVU in football @WVU a few years ago to keep the Mountaineers out of the BCS Championship).  I liked the grit I saw yesterday from the young guys and their ability to create shots and drive to the rim, but I think ...(more)

Has anyone noticed he's about 100 times more agressive this year than years past.  I'm not sure if he can become a dominate player but I'm thinking he's going to contribute a lot more than years past.  He's showing some emotion out there,  but every once in a while still has the "deer in headlights" look about him.

For all of the fans getting too excited and envisioning top 10 or top 15, I don't think you should get your hopes up....just yet.
We are playing all cupcakes pre-Big East, except a couple.   And Indiana can't be counted as a legit team because they are depleted by probation still.  The only thing I will say is the Wofford game looks slightly better, don't know if you all realiz

Pitt really impressed me tonight they hung with Texas for most of the game, but the Longhorns experience and depth took over in the end and just wore down the Panthers, Texas is definently worth their ranking they are a very good and talented team that could make a run in the tournament this year but Pitt played with a lot of heart tonight and they can build off this game in future games and I thi ...(more)

In case you have not heard yet, JJ has committed to Pitt for 2011 and is a great two way guard with strong defensive skills.  Sounds like a great compliment to Epps, Woodall at the point and Cameron Wright, Gibbs at the shooting guard for 2011 and after.   With the big guys coming in this year, looks like we will need to be looking at a Center.  With these types of two way ...(more)

First off, I think it's ludacris to think that Pitt will not make the tournament.  Yes they lost a lot, but they got a 5 star recruit coming in, a tandem of good 3 ballers and still have guys that play solid defense.

However, I don't know much about Dante Taylor and what style of player he is.  I've been hearing that he's a Karl Malone type of PF, being very good at j

Where is this guy now? The little guy always played with a lot of heart. It`s a shame he couldn`t get a shot in the pros.

Also, what about Mike Cook?

Signed, sealed, and delivered.  That is, with the commitment of J.J. Moore, a four star wing from South Kent School, the Panthers have locked up three highly touted commits for the 2010 season.  In addition to Moore, PG Isiah Epps, and SG Cameron Wright signed their letter of intent.  All three players are considered 4 star recruits who were rated among the top 20 at each position.& ...(more)

We are less than a month away from the start of the 2009-10 College Basketball Season, What do you think Pitt's expectations are this year. To me its going to be a rebuilding year Pitt lost alot and we are gonna be rebuilding but I am looking forward to seeing some of these freshman including Dante Taylor. It could be a down year for pitt basketball but we will just wait and see what happens. One ...(more)
