Owls report: Strategy and personnel

Strategy and personnel · Notes, quotes · Getting inside

NBA BOUND
No one.

KEY RETURNEES
In 6-6 senior-to-be Mardy Collins, Temple will have one of the most complete players in the college game on its campus. Collins can score (17.5 ppg), rebound (5.9 rpg), run the show (3.6 apg) and is a steals whiz at the top of Temple's matchup zone (85 steals in 2004-05). Collins will be joined by two returning double-figure perimeter scorers in Mark Tyndale (12.5 ppg), a slasher who most improve his shot selection and the rotation on his perimeter J, and Dustin Salisbery, who must penetrate a little more.

The Owls' frontcourt will be experienced, but is flawed. Keith Butler, a 7-1 senior-to-be, has never lived up to his advanced billing and only has one more season not to play so timidly. Antwayne Robinson, a 6-8 senior-to-be, is reluctant to play inside at all despite his long arms and leaping ability. Instead, Robinson (8.2 ppg) mostly hoists three-point shots. And Wayne Marshall (6.6 ppg, 4.8 rpg) simply needs to get in better shape. He has soft hands and a nice touch around the hoop, but often looked fatigued out in 2004-05 because he wasn't anywhere near tip-top shape.

THE COACH
Temple's Hall of Fame coach John Chaney survived his ill-advised decision to send Nehemiah Ingram into a game to rough up Saint Joseph's players back on Feb. 22 (and the firestorm of criticism that followed) and will be back as the Owls' coach in 2005-06. However, there's been speculation that this might be Chaney's farewell tour. Chaney, who has compiled a 724-297 won-loss record in his 33 seasons as a collegiate coach, needs one more win for his 500th at the school.

ROSTER REPORT

--The Owls signed 6-10 forward Sergio Olmos from Spain last year. Olmos enrolled at Temple but didn't play in 2004-05, so he'll have four years of eligibility remaining.

--Temple also signed a pair of perimeter players in 6-4 high school guard Semaj Inge of Woodrow Wilson High School in Camden, N.J. and 6-5 Philly native Dionte Christmas. Inge is fully qualified to play in 2005-06, while there are serious doubts as to whether Christmas will be. Semaj Inge ("Semaj is "James" spelled backwards) has a twin brother James, who is a year behind him in school but is also being recruiting heavily by the Owls' coaching staff.
