Cavaliers report: Strategy and personnel
POSTSEASON OUTLOOK
At the end of last season, Virginia could have played in one of the third-tier tournaments like the College Basketball Invitation. But given the massive roster turnover he knew was coming, Virginia coach Tony Bennett, then in his first year, decided to rule out any postseason play. This year, Bennett appears to be more open to it for obvious reasons -- his team's youth. It's not a hard argument to make that the Cavalier's multiple freshman starters could use the experience of a postseason tournament.
FUTURES MARKET
After the loss of leading scorer and rebounder Mike Scott, a senior forward, Virginia coaches knew they needed sophomore C Assane Sene to move from playing only occasional minutes into the starting lineup. Sene responded incredibly well, as indicated by his career-high 15 points March 5 against Maryland. It was only the fourth time in his career Sene had scored in double figures, all this season, and all after the injury to Scott.
PLAYER NOTES
--Senior F Will Sherrill, finally returning in earnest since re-injuring his left leg Feb. 5 against Miami, set his second career high of the week with nine rebounds against Maryland on March 5.
--Senior G Mustapha Farrakhan scored 10-plus points for the six straight game March 5 against Maryland, tying the longest streak of his career. It was the 23rd time this season Farrakhan had scored in double figures.
