Hokies report: Notes, quotes

Getting inside · Strategy and personnel · Notes, quotes

--The Hokies' two wins in the ACC tourney marked the first time they'd won multiple games in their seven seasons in the conference. They have made four previous semifinal appearances, but only had to win one game the first three times to get there.

--Erick Green's 19-footer with 4.7 seconds left gave the Hokies a 52-51 ACC quarterfinal win over Florida State late Friday night, probably assuring they will make the NCAA Tournament field next week. The Seminoles' Derwin Kitchen appeared to hit a fallaway jumper as time expired, but a replay review revealed that Kitchen's index finger was still on the ball as the clock hit zero. Malcolm Delaney scored 11 of his game-high 16 points in the second half for Virginia Tech.

--Sophomore F Manny Atkins was the team's MVP against Florida State, producing 14 points off the bench and canning three 3-pointers. Atkins was the only reserve to play, making it the first ACC tournament game since 1997 that a team had used only six players.

--Getting a win it had to have to stay in the NCAA Tournament at-large picture, Virginia Tech rolled to a 37-19 halftime lead and cruised past Georgia Tech 59-43 Thursday night in the ACC tourney's first round. Malcolm Delaney scored a game-high 15 points for the Hokies, which notched their 20th win. They shot 47 percent from the floor and limited the Yellow Jackets to 32 percent shooting.

--Senior F Jeff Allen (ankle) produced a 14-point, 11-rebound double-double against Georgia Tech, his 16th of the year. Allen was injured in the second half at Clemson and tweaked it early in the second half against Georgia Tech, but played through it.

BY THE NUMBERS
14 -- The number of turnovers the Hokies committed in the first half of their loss at Clemson. Half came from Jeff Allen, as the Tigers doubled him in the post and forced him to make bad decisions. By contrast, Virginia Tech had just 11 turnovers in its previous two games.

QUOTE TO NOTE
"It's easy for people to be cynical, but in the big picture, they've done some special things with a limited bench and a lot of responsibilities heaped upon them." -- Coach Seth Greenberg, after the loss at Clemson.
