Huskies report: Getting inside

The Huskies are sharing preseason top billing in the Pac-10 with Cal, which does return four starters from a team that twice beat UW last season.

Then again, Washington, not Cal, won the Pac-10's regular season title.

"We're the defending Pac-10 champs, so it definitely goes through us first," sophomore guard Isaiah Thomas said. "People can have their own opinions -- Cal has everyone back, they're a great team and they beat us both times last year. They're hungry.

"But we've got some new guys who are going to make a difference this year."

Foremost among them is freshman point guard Abdul Gaddy, who joins Thomas to form one of the most explosive and potentially entertaining backcourts anywhere.

In an interview this summer with SI.com, Thomas was asked to envision how things will shake out with his new guard partner.

"I just envision a lot of, I guess, highlights," he said. "With a guy like (Gaddy) handling the ball, you don't know what can happen, and with a guy like me having the ball too, it's going to be fun to watch.

"Abdul is as good as advertised, with what he does with assists and creating (opportunities) for people, and I'm probably more of a scorer, so we're both going to be able to do what we do."

Gone is Jon Brockman, the Huskies' rebounding machine for the past four seasons. Expect fast-paced UW -- which led the Pac-10 at 78.6 points per game last year -- to play even faster.

The up-tempo formula allowed coach Lorenzo Romar's squad to become the first Pac-10 school since Oregon State in 1958 to follow a losing season with a conference regular-season title.

There are issues, starting with who will eat up the rebounds left by Brockman. Senior forward Quincy Pondexter will need to contribute there, along with Matthew Bryan-Amaning, Darnell Gant and a couple freshmen.

The Huskies also either need to begin shooting better from the 3-point range, or shooting less often. They were ninth in the Pac-10 in accuracy from beyond the arc at 33.7 percent, and their returning players converted just 29.7 percent.

Granted, it's only 4 games against mid-majors, but he's playing really great; not just scoring, but doing the little things like playing good defense, crashing the offensive glass, making his FT's... he really seems to be stepping up as a senior, reminds me a lot of B-Roy his senior year.  I hope he can keep it up.

Well, after that tough loss to Purdue last spring and all the hype surrounding this year's team, it's been a really long off-season.  While these 3 opponents are really big names, they're pretty solid mid-majors who've made the tournament in recent years.  I think we can get a pretty good picture of where this team is and if they have what it takes to match or exceed last year's results. ...(more)

Thomas is our leader, which is good! Down low needs some game experience. I see us trying to feed it low but nothing too positive.Hopefully some experience will help. Against a tougher opponent, we are going to need that toughness down low. Brockman is surely missed!

How do you think the conference will shake out this year?  Here are my thoughts:
1. Cal
2. UW
3. UCLA
4. Arizona
5. Oregon State
6. Washington State
7. Oregon
8. USC
9. Arizona State
10. Stanford
Obviously, you could go either way for the top spot, and I wouldn't be surprised if the Huskies take it.  But Cal looks really solid as wel

I just saw a preseason top 25 that had the Huskies at #12.  Do you think that seems high?  I know they're basing on Thomas/Gaddy in the backcourt, but it just seems to me they're going to miss Jon Brockman more than they think, especially early in the conference season.

Does anyone have any insight on these two kids regarding thier interest in the UW?

I saw on Dawgman that Smith now has the Huskies and UCLA "High" on his list, so he appears to be down to those two schools.  Wroten hasn't seemed to narrow it down too much, but the UW is his list according to that site.

Anyway, it would sure be nice to see those two s
