Huskies report: Strategy and personnel
POSTSEASON OUTLOOK
The Huskies everyone expected to see all season finally showed up in the Pac-10 Tournament as Washington swept through Washington State, Oregon and finally Arizona to win the conference tourney for the third time since 2005.UW is now 23-10 and assured of a third straight bid to the NCAA Tournament.
"It's a good time for us to be playing together and playing right,'' said UW coach Lorenzo Romar, who earlier in the week had called this his most trying season, due in part to an investigation that resulted last week in a charge on point guard Venoy Overton of supplying alcohol to a minor. Overton was suspended this week and UW was able to win three games in three days with essentially an eight-man roster.
Overton, however, will be eligible for the NCAA Tournament.
Entering the season, Romar openly talked about this being the year he felt the Huskies could finally get past the Sweet 16 -- three of his UW teams since 2005 have been stopped in that round.
FUTURES MARKET
Redshirt freshman G C.J. Wilcox was spectacular in the Huskies' win over UCLA, scoring all of his career-high 24 points in the second half. "You talk about what's at stake tonight, and he comes in and gets 24 in the second half. That's a performance I'll never forget," Washington coach Lorenzo Romar said. "That's one of the greatest performances maybe in the history of the program." Wilcox shot 7-for-8 from the field and made all six of his free throws.
Then he went silent against USC, shooting 1-for-7, including 0-for-5 from 3-point range, in a four-point performance.
PLAYER NOTES
--Freshman G Terrence Ross made the Pac-10 All-Tournament team after having played just four minutes in home games the previous weekend against UCLA and USC. With Venoy Overton out, Ross moved into the starting lineup and responded with 46 points in the three games on 19-36 shooting.
--The late-season struggles of center Matthew Bryan-Amaning, who was named not only as the conference's Most Improved Player but also to the all-conference team, continued against Oregon as he had just six points on 2-9 shooting. He's averaging 16 for the season but has hit that total just once in the past five games, scoring 14, 7, 11, 16 and six points in that span going 20-53.
