Cougars report: Getting inside

The Cougars have played more wide-open basketball this season, but that doesn't mean first-year coach Ken Bone wants them to ignore defense.

"We talked quite a bit about defense the past couple days because there have been games recently where we haven't played up to the standards we like to play," Bone said after the Cougars snapped a three-game losing streak with a 78-60 win over Arizona.

In those three previous games, WSU had allowed 74, 92 and 81 points -- an average of more than 82 per game.

The Cougars tightened the bolts against Arizona, shutting down senior guard Nic Wise, limiting Arizona to 33 percent shooting in the first half, then breaking the game open by forcing eight second-half turnovers.

WSU also got a big-time performance inside from sophomore forward DeAngelo Casto.

Casto was matched against Derrick Williams, perhaps the leading candidate to win Pac-10 Freshman of the Year honors. Casto responded with a career-high 19 points, to go with nine rebounds and three blocked shots.

"You don't want to get shown up," Casto said of his matchup with standout with Williams. "You always want to be a good defender but you also want to go at him and let him know he's not the only person on the court who can score."

Casto said the tone was set in practice for a better game-day performance.

"As soon as we walked in the gym, we were ready to go," he said. "Everybody put in their two cents and played hard."

I am just curious about how you guys feel about coach Bone, here are a few things i don't like... 1) we statistically have the worst defense in the pac 10. 2) In the game last night we were just getting back into it... casto had back to back blocks and moore was making things happen on offense, the crowd was on their feet, THEN, coach bone subbed them BOTH out... i was like "what the ...(more)

Well guys, this is it for us. If we lose even one of the next two games agaisnt the Arizona schools, if think our chances are done to make the NCAA toury. I think we need to start thinking NIT. I'm praying that we start winning big games or win the PAC-10 toury, but the way we are playing I'm not sure that will happen. I think that we play well but we need to start playing better defense and rebou ...(more)

I thought that we must be one of the youngest teams in college ball, and while watching the UCLA game on FSN a commentator confirmed by saying that the Cougars of Washington State are THE YOUNGEST team in D1 ball. This gives me great hope! we're the youngest team and we only have a handful of losses. we have young future NBA talent, i think we're in for a good couple years, hoping that Klay a ...(more)

One thing is extremely clear to me after last nights game. We have some seriously young players and one guy who is older. Nik is the man lately (god that sounds weird). They Showed they have heart though, that they won't give up when they are down by 20 or 15 or anything at half. They know they can make a comeback. Now if only we can stop making turnovers in the first half and giving up ...(more)

Wow what a collapse. That was Gonzaga-esque, except we actually held on for the win this time. When Klay is off, Reggie steps up. Whem Klay is on, Reggie dishes him the ball and lets Klay do work. It's evident by the stats. Thursday, Klay had a slow 18 points so Reggie stepped up and scored 25. Today, Klay was on fire with 27 points, so Reggie step ...(more)

I've been really impressed with some of these freshmen and also impressed with the improvement of some of the returning players.  Who has really struck you as being impressive so far this season?

1) Klay - We all knew he could shoot last season... didn't know he could do EVERYTHING else this well though!  Very impressed with his improvement from last year.  He looks mu ...(more)

At the start of this season, there were rumors that if that WSU did well this season that Thompson would enter the NBA daft.

" ESPN.com projects you as a possible low first-round draft pick if you enter your name in the NBA draft this year after your sophomore season. Are you interested?"

The loss to Oregon was only because of the Technical foul, which in all fairness was a technical foul, BUT it should be noted that at the oregon state game tonight oregon state was off of the bench at least 3 times, maybe more... to lose a game b/c of such a weak call is just ridiculous, especially since it's something that happens on a reg ...(more)

this is so idiotic, the Pac-10 has a worse tv contract than the WCC, I thought the new commish was going to step in and do something about it, he made the football schedule better so at least 3 of the 5 Pac-10 games got on Saturday, allowing 1 out of 5 is idiotic, I know everyone loves the Cougs but if we can get noone from WSU, UW, Oregon and Oregon State to go in a boycott to get the commish to ...(more)

Now that Bama's taken care of those overrated Horns, its time to focus on College Basketball! And thanks to Klay Thompson and Ken Bone, the Cougs are finally gettin' some national recognition. I'm hoping for a 24-6 record heading into the Pac-Ten tourny, and a 26-7 record going into the Big Dance. I don't think those are too unreasonable of goals for the Cougs; with all our young talent (8 fres ...(more)

Only one statistic matters, the win-loss column, I know. But as an obsessive compulsive Cougar I find myself passing the time in between the action digging into meaningless statistics. We are now deep enough into the season that records are beginning to fall. I thought I would share a few.

Klay Thompson and DeAngelo Casto have found there way a few WSU career leader lists (scoring top

East Coast Bias, Very Questionable Early Season Polls, Weird Schedules. WSU STILL didn't recieve a vote in the AP poll, and somehow moved down from 40 to 45 in the Coaches Poll! How is that even possible to move down five after a 24 point win against a mediocore? College basketball confuses me so much. And don't even get me started on the latest AP poll released today, such a joke! Anyone else agr ...(more)

I would say I'm pretty satisfied with our record going into the Pac-10.  The cougs only losses are to highly touted and ranked teams.  We probably should be 11-1, but nevertheless, i'm excited to see us start conference play.  Having Oregon/Oregon State at home to start I think is a good way to get us started with a couple wins.

I am excited to see our team, espe

The more I watch this kid, the more I feel like this season is the last we'll see of him in a WSU uni.  This guy is GOOD, he'll be in the league next year.
