Mountaineers report: Strategy and personnel
POSTSEASON OUTLOOK
WVU lost in the Big East tournament second round but closed with a rush, playing its best basketball at the end of the season while winning three in a row. The Mountaineers had one of the toughest schedules in the nation, ranking fourth going into the final weekend, and if they can win a couple of games in the Big East Tournament might draw an even better seed than No. 6 in the NCAAs.
PLAYER NOTES
--Dominique Rutledge, an athletic 6-foot-7 forward, has committed to play to West Virginia for next season. Rutledge, 235 pounds, is earning his academic credentials at Western Texas College after four stops since his days at Malcom X Shabazz High in Newark, N.J. Rutledge is known as an athletic mid-range scorer who can also rebound. He's said to possess good ball skills and energy. Additionally, he is ambidextrous.
--F Kevin Jones became the first Mountaineer to score 25 points with at least 15 rebounds since Chris Moss in a 2001 double-overtime, 107-101 win at Villanova when he scored 25 with 16 rebounds in the regular season finale against Louisville. The last Mountaineer to do it in regulation was Gordon Malone when he scored 28 with 15 rebounds on Jan. 29, 1997 against Boston College,
--F Kevin Jones closed the season with three straight double-doubles, scoring 52 points with 37 rebounds in those three games. He had eight double-doubles through March 6, tied for second in the Big East.
