Western Kentucky captured the Sun Belt conference championship for the second consecutive season, earning their 21st trip to the NCAA tournament. The Hilltopppers blew a 15-point lead before pulling away late in the title game against South Alabama.

In last year's NCAA tournament, the Hilltoppers reached the Sweet 16 as a 12th seed. They defeated Drake in the first round and San Diego in the second round before falling to UCLA 88-78 in the West regional semifinals.
