FSU AD doesn't know where Derrick Brooks "got that"

AMELIA ISLAND, Fla. -- Derrick Brooks, a former Florida State board of trustees member and All-American linebacker for the Seminoles, said Wednesday that the Big 12 initiated contact with Florida State about joining the league.

However, Florida State athletic director Randy Spetman, attending the ACC's spring meetings, told CBSSports.com "I don't know where Derrick got that."

For a second consecutive day, Spetman refused to comment any further about the Florida State and Big 12 chatter.

Appearing on The Tim Brando Show Wednesday, Brooks said "from our understanding this is the Big 12 reaching out to us. The Big 12 approached Florida State, not the other way around."

However, Texas athletic director DeLoss Dodds told the Austin-American Statesman on Monday that "there had been no conversations between Florida State and the Big 12."

On Saturday, FSU Board of Trustees chairman Andy Haggard ripped the ACC's new media rights deal, worth $17 million per school annually, and told Warchant.com the school board "unanimously favored seeing what the Big 12 might have to offer."

That same day, FSU coach Jimbo Fisher told the Orlando Sentinel "if that [jumping to the Big 12] is what's best for Florida State, then that's what we need to do."

On Monday, FSU president Eric Barron sent an email about the Big 12 chatter.

"I want to assure you that any decision made about FSU athletics will be reasoned and thoughtful and based on athletics, finances and academics," Barron wrote.
