Cal starting QB Zach Maynard benched for academic reasons
Cal quarterback Zach Maynard, who was expected to start against Nevada Saturday, was benched by coach Jeff Tedford for missing a tutoring appointment earlier in the summer. Backup QB Allan Bridgford started in Maynard's place against the Wolf Pack.
Maynard started all 13 games for the Bears in 2011 and was expected to begin the 2012 season under center, so the benching comes as a surprise. Last season, Maynard threw for 2,990 yards and 17 touchdowns while leading the Bears to a 7-6 record and a Holiday Bowl appearance.
Maynard is expected to play at some point Saturday, school officials said.
