Mike Riley is considered one of the good guys in college football, a hometown boy who coaches at the place his father once coached.
Every once in a while, the good guy wins.
Riley is our coach of the week for engineering the Oregon State Beavers' surprise 10-7 win over visiting No. 13 Wisconsin on Saturday. The win was made all the more special because the game served as the Beavers' season-opener, after their Week 1 opponent Nicholls State was unable to travel because of Hurricane Isaac.
Riley had the Beavers focused and hungry, particularly on defense, and particularly against running back Montee Ball. The once-Heisman hopeful saw his campaign dealt a crushing blow with the 15-carry, 61-yard performance, which featured no appearances in the end zone, breaking a streak of 21 straight games with a touchdown.
“That is probably the best (defensive performance) in Reser,” Riley told Lindsay Schnell of the Oregonian. “A beautiful job, a great mixture of stuff … you know where we've been, and we haven't been good at stopping the run. It was really nice.”
And Riley, who's seat grew even the slightest bit warmer after a 3-9 season last season, is sitting comfortably.
