Georgia Prez on BCS Rose Bowl plan: 'This isn't 1950, or 1960'
Earlier this week, the USA Today had a report about the playoff models the BCS was currently considering, including a new one that had the Rose Bowl playing a large role in the postseason. Essentially, while the top four teams would play for the title, if any of those teams were from the Pac-12 or Big Ten, they'd go to the Rose Bowl instead, which would mean there were six teams in a four team playoff. It's an idea we've already had plenty of fun with, not to mention showed an easy way to solve the stupidity of.
As it turns out, we aren't the only ones who seem to think the idea in itself is ridiculous. Georgia President Michael Adams told the Wall Street Journal as much.
“This is not 1950, or 1960,” Adams said told the paper. “There are great schools in the ACC and the Southeastern Conference and the Big 12. I think it's time to put everybody on an equal footing. I just reject the notion that the Big Ten and the Pac-12 ought to be treated differently in this process.
“If they can be accommodated without changing the entire process, then I think everyone is open to that. I have great respect for the Big Ten and the Pac-12, and have two Big Ten degrees [from
When asked for comment on Adams' thoughts, Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany said he was "glad that Michael Adams and others were fully participating in the discussion." Which I'm pretty sure is Jim Delany for "release the hounds."
What makes this all a bit more ridiculous is that Ed Ray, who happens to be the president at Oregon State and the chair of the Pac-12's CEO group, told the
“We as a group never discussed that option," Ray said. "This is the first time I'm hearing it. But that doesn't mean that people weren't in conversations where all these things came up and somebody suggested it.”
I'm just going to pretend, no, hope, that the BCS inserted this option into the proposals as a joke. Just to make sure we were all still paying attention.
