Clemson receiver Sammy Watkins arrested on drug charges
Clemson wide receiver Sammy Watkins and was arrested early Friday morning according to a report by CBS 7 in South Carolina. The arrest was confirmed by Greg Wallace of the Anderson Independent-Mail.According to a release from university police, Watkins was arrested along with Clemson soccer player Amadou-Tidiane Daniel Dia after police pulled Watkins over in his car Friday morning. The officer saw Watkins' car scrape against a curb on campus, and when he approached the car he smelled marijuana.
Inside the car he found marijuana and two pills that Watkins did not have a prescription for.
Watkins was booked into Clemson City Jail and released on a $1,620 recognizance bond.
"I made a mistake last night and I am truly sorry for my actions," Watkins said in a statement. "I let the team down, the coaches down and this University down. I will learn from this. I will accept any discipline Coach Swinney and the University issues."
"I am aware of the arrest last night. I am mad and hurt by the poor decision that Sammy Watkins made," said Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney. "He is a good young man who has been a model student, citizen, player and teammate. This is a reminder that good people make poor decisions. But, there are consequences for your actions...and there will be in this case. I am in the process of gathering the facts and discipline will be determined when I have completed that process."
Watkins caught 82 passes as a freshman for Clemson in 2011, and led the team with 1,219 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns.
