UCLA AD Guerrero sees no issues with Combs' scholarship

SAN DIEGO -- If you are looking for a controversy that screams "only during the offseason," then look no further than the fracas that has surfaced over Justin Combs, son of hip-hop mogul Sean "Diddy" Combs, receiving a football scholarship to UCLA.

Mind you, the 5-foot-9 defensive back from New York committed to the Bruins all the way back in November (and signed a letter of intent this past February), but apparently this is just now an issue for the talking heads of the world to come out and say Combs should give back his scholarship and have his father pay his way through school. Like I said, an offseason story.

UCLA athletic director Dan Guerrero, in San Diego for Pac-12 summer meetings, had a bit of a chuckle at the whole situation and says this is not the first time someone of similar financial means has come to Westwood to play for the Bruins.

"It was very unexpected," Guerrero said. "Believe me he's not the first individual whose father has made a lot of money over the course of a couple of years that has received a scholarship, across the board in all sports. Why it was raised now is very surprising to me. Once again, these are merit-based scholarships and have nothing to do with one's financial ability and they'll continue to be that way in the future."

As CBSSports.com college football blogger Tom Fornelli aptly put it, just because Combs happens to have a famous name, it doesn't mean he owes anybody anything. Count the UCLA AD in the same group.
