Washington AD Woodward moving on from Lupoi incident
SAN DIEGO -- On Thursday, Washington confirmed to CBS Sports senior writer Bruce Feldman that assistant coach Tosh Lupoi was taken off the road and “limited” during the spring evaluation period as a result of a self-reported, secondary NCAA violation.
Speaking at the Pac-12's summer meetings on Friday, athletic director Scott Woodward said that while compliance is taken seriously by the school he felt the press coverage of the incident may have been overblown because Lupoi, who left California for a reported three-year guaranteed deal, was the coach in question.
"I sign secondary violations on a weekly basis," Woodward said. "It is what it is, a self-reported, self-imposed secondary violation. You guys make a big deal about it because it's Tosh Lupoi, but it's not that big of deal to us. Secondary violations are taken seriously by us, but it's not like he's in line for a death row sentence."
According to the school, the secondary violation occurred when Lupoi, right, publicized the visit of a prospective student-athlete by confirming information about the recruit to members of the student section at a men's basketball game.
The recruit ultimately did not sign with Washington.
