Brandon Wright: The New Orleans Bowl didn't start the way Southern Mississippi and freshman quarterback Austin Davis would have liked. Charged a timeout because they didn't wear visitors' white uniforms, the Golden Eagles had a false start on the first play from scrimmage. On the next play, Davis and Damion Fletcher fumbled an option pitch and Troy's Jorrick Calvin returned it 17 yards for a touchdown. Full story | UWIRE Bowl Coverage

Team Reports
  • Southern Mississippi: It's the third appearance in the New Orleans Bowl for Southern Miss, which defeated North Texas in 2004 and Arkansas State in 2005, a game that was moved to Lafayette, La., after Hurricane Katrina damaged the Superdome. More

  • Troy: Troy secured their first outright conference championship by whipping Arkansas State 35-9 in the season finale. In between -- other than a one-point loss at Louisiana-Monroe -- Troy proved to be the league's most consistent team. More

Great ending, but Troy shouldn't have even let Southern Miss back in the game. Up 10 in the 4th quarter, they were driving the ball into Golden Eagle territory. On the 3rd and 4 play the receiver Terry tried to get a little too cute, by backpedaling to make a big play, when simply falling forward would have given them a first down at their opponent's 38 yard line. The coaching staff compounded this by trying to go for it on 4th, a questionable call with the lead so late. Failure to convert here gave Southern Miss great field position, and 5 plays later the game was within a field goal. Post your thoughts!

"We played LSU earlier this year and blew a 28-point lead. After that, we knew nothing's in hand until the game's over. I expected it to be a close game and I was thrilled to be up 10 in the fourth, but we couldn't finish it."
