J. Darin Darst's Take
Remember when a Steve Spurrier offense would score 40 points a game? Hard to do when you can't pass or run the ball. On the flip side, nice way for Andre Dixon to finish his career and a great way for Connecticut to close out an emotional season.

Game Recap
Andre Dixon rushed for 126 yards and a touchdown and resilient Connecticut ended a trying season with a 20-7 victory over South Carolina in the Papajohns.com Bowl. The Huskies are 3-1 in bowl games since moving up to Division I-A (now FBS) in 2002. They won their final three regular-season games and overcame the October stabbing death of cornerback Jasper Howard to reach a bowl. Dixon was the Most Valuable Player and joined teammate Jordan Todman as 1,000-yard rushers, the first time two UConn backs have surpassed that mark in a season. Full story

Team Reports
  • Connecticut: This may not have been the best season for the Huskies under Randy Esdall, and at least as far as the record is concerned, it certainly isn't the worst. But it had more than its fair share of peaks and valleys. More

  • South Carolina: The future looks bright for the Gamecocks. Fans are still bubbling about their impressive performance against Clemson. Players are winning awards, like All-American linebacker Eric Norwood and the four South Carolina youngsters named to the SEC All-Freshman team. More

"I was a little worried that the season had been so long and so tough on them that I didn't see a whole lot of emotion from them. But I guess they were just saving it up for today."
          -- Connecticut coach Randy Edsall

"The first thing I want to do is apologize to about 30,000 Gamecocks who came here to see a football game, and we couldn't put one on."
-- South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier
