Report: Danny O'Brien considering Penn State for transfer

By Chip Patterson | College Football/Basketball Writer
Former Maryland quarterback Danny O'Brien is the latest high profile college football player to explore the NCAA's post-graduate transfer option. Planning to earn his degree from College Park at the end of the semester, and with two years of football eligibility left; O'Brien can transfer to another FBS university and compete in the 2012 season - as long as he enrolls in a graduate program not offered at Maryland.

Earlier this month The Hartford Courant's Desmond Conner reported that Connecticut, Penn State, and Wisconsin were "showing the most interest" in O'Brien. Vanderbilt has also been considered one likely landing spot for the former Freshman All-American, mostly because of head coach - and former Maryland offensive coordinator - James Franklin .

Penn State's status as a contender for O'Brien got a quick confirmation from head coach Bill O'Brien (no relation), who spoke on the subject at Penn State's Pro Day Thursday.

"Danny does have an interest," O'Brien told reporters. "He obviously was granted a release by the University of Maryland and contacted us. He's contacted a few other schools so I'd say we're one of many schools that he's looking at. But like I've said to our football team from the beginning, if I can do anything to improve the football team within the rules, whether it's a recruiting idea, or a scheme or a transfer, then I'm definitely going to look into it, and that's part of the process right now with Danny O'Brien."

O'Brien would have the opportunity to immediately compete with Rob Bolden and Matt McGloin for the starting job. The two quarterbacks split snaps throughout the tumultuous 2011 season, with neither jumping ahead as the guaranteed starter for 2012.

With the announcement that Wisconsin quarterback Jon Budmayr is going to miss all of spring practice with yet another setback to his throwing elbow injury, many believe that the Badgers will make a strong push for O'Brien as well. After seeing the success that Russell Wilson was able to bring to the Badgers, you can bet Bret Bielema is open-minded about repeating the process with the 2010 ACC Rookie of the Year.
