Future Clemson-Georgia series threatened by ACC expansion, 9-game schedule

By Chip Patterson | College Football/Basketball Writer
The ACC's decision to move towards a nine-game conference schedule may jeopardize the scheduled meetings between Georgia and Clemson in 2013 and 2014.

Georgia athletic director Greg McGarity confirmed on Tuesday that discussions regarding the series' future have been ongoing with Clemson athletic director Terry Don Phillips. According to the Athens Banner-Herald, McGarity's comments suggest that the nine game schedule will not allow for the series to take place, but the "when" is still unknown.

"I don't think Clemson knows exactly where things stand as far as expansion but we're just trying to see the lay of the land because we know that they're going to expand at nine games at some point in time," McGarity said. "When that is, we're just trying to stay ahead of it. We've had a few discussions on the phone about where things stand we're just waiting to hear back from Clemson on what their plans are in the future."

Clemson is not rushinga decision to cancel the series, and would like to work out the scheduling if possible. Conference expansion has made nonconference scheduling more difficult for all FBS schools, and it makes sense that Georgia would want to free up that future date before getting stuck in a position like Florida State did with West Virginia this spring. The Mountaineers were forced to buy their way out of a 2012 trip to Tallahassee to expedite the move to the Big 12. The late notice left the Seminoles with few nonconference options, and eventually they filled the slot with Savannah State.

According to the game contract, there is a $500,000 cancellation fee unless there is "mutual consent" from both schools. Georgia is scheduled to play at Clemson in 2013, with the Tigers making a trip to Athens in 2014.
