Montgomery (Ala.) schools decline "Nick Saban High School" suggestion

By Jerry Hinnen | Staff Writer

Ask the Alabamian public-at-large "hey, who or what should we honor when we're naming this important thing?", and "college football coach" is always going to be the first suggestion to pop into a sizable number of minds.

So forgive us if we find it less "surprising" and more "inevitable" that at least one respondent to the Montgomery public school board's call for names for a new high school followed through and suggested "Nick Saban High School," the Montgomery Advertiser reported Monday. Equally unsurprisingly, the naming committee ultimately went with "New Park High School" over the Saban suggestion (and some 60 others).

“As big as an Alabama fan as I am, it would likely not be an appropriate choice, especially this close to the Plains,” Montgomery Public Schools spokesman Tom Salter, who "playfully declined comment" when asked why Gene Chizik's name had not been submitted.

We're glad to hear that geographical proximity to Auburn is the biggest thing making the choice of a sitting head football coach (one whose relationship with high school students isn't always exactly philanthropic) "likely" less than the best one. To be fair to Salter, though, we doubt he's entirely serious--and the school board may just be delaying the inevitable if Saban continues to snag national championships at his current rate. (Paul W. Bryant High School opened in Tuscaloosa in 2003, though even Saban still has a long way to go to match Bryant's legendary status among the Crimson Tide faithful.)

So get your wisecracks in now; 25 years from now, the suggestion inbox may be overrun, and the 2040 version of "New Park" may have its work cut out for it.
