Maryland DL Joe Vellano will miss the rest of spring with a foot injury

By Chip Patterson | College Writer
Maryland defensive end Joe Vellano will miss the rest of spring practice with a foot injury, head coach Randy Edsall confirmed on his Twitter account on Saturday.

"Solid scrimmage today," Edsall tweeted. "Unfortunately, we just learned that Joe Vellano will be out the rest of spring practice with a foot injury."

Vellano was a All-ACC First Team selection at defensive tackle in 2011 after recording 94 tackles and 7.5 tackles for loss. The senior defensive lineman was listed as the starting defensive end on Maryland's pre-spring depth chart, with the Terps moving to an aggressive 3-4 scheme under new defensive coordinator Brian Stewart.

Maryland returns 11 of the top 13 tacklers from 2011, including Vellano and team leader Demetrius Hartsfield. Stewart will try to help the experienced group improve from their ACC-worst 457.2 yards per game and 34.3 points per game showing a season ago.
