Urban Meyer responds to Sporting News article

By Tom Fornelli | College Football Writer
On Monday The Sporting News published an article outlining the last couple of years of Urban Meyer's tenure at Florida. In the story, one former player in particular, Bryan Thomas, did not portray Meyer as being the nicest coach.

Thomas said that Meyer gave some players special treatment and that it helped lead to the decline of the Florida program. Thomas also said that Meyer was a good coach but a "bad person."

When asked about the story on Wednesday, not surprisingly, Meyer had a different view of the way things worked out.

“My family and I love Florida,” Meyer told The Columbus Dispatch. “We still do and always will. I'm not sure where a three-month investigation shows up. I'm extremely proud of what our players and coaches accomplished.

“We were hired to graduate players. We did that. We were Top 3 every year in the SEC in graduating and APR. We were hired to win games. We did that. We followed the rules. We did that. We recruited great classes. We finished in the Top 5 every year.”

Meyer did admit that some players earned special treatment, but the "Circle of Trust" that Thomas alleged in the story was news to him and his coaching staff.

Meyer also addressed the allegations against his recruiting practices by Wisconsin, which we wrote about here on Monday. The story reported that Wisconsin claimed Meyer and his coaches used illegal recruiting practices with offensive lineman Kyle Dodson, saying Ohio State had NFL players call Dodson and had assistant's "bump" into Dodson during the dead period.

“If you would bold that for me and underline it, there is not an NCAA violation,” Meyer said. “There was not one turned in. There's a pretty good track record there as far as compliance with the NCAA. Those (insinuations) are disappointing, and again, I'm not sure of the intent.”
