Mark Dantonio on Michigan: 'Where's the threat?'

By Tom Fornelli | College Football Writer
While the rivalry between Michigan and Ohio State is the one that gets just about all of the national attention, there's also the rivalry between Michigan and Michigan State. While this in-state rivalry may not have had as large an impact on the national college football picture over the course of its history, make no mistake, these are two teams that don't like each other.

And Michigan State head coach Mark Dantonio added a little more hate to the mix while talking to ESPN.com.

"We're laying in the weeds," Dantonio told Brian Bennett. "We've beat Michigan the last four years. So where's the threat?"

Yes, while Michigan may have won the Sugar Bowl last season, and finally beat Ohio State, it still has not gotten over the hump that has been Michigan State recently. As Dantonio mentioned, the Spartans have beaten the Wolverines four years running, with last season's victory being the difference in the Legends Division.

It's hard to blame Dantonio for being a bit cocky right now. The Spartans have gone 22-5 over the last two seasons, played in the first Big Ten Championship Game and also defeated Georgia in the Outback Bowl.

Michigan State's first bowl win since 2001.

So while Michigan has plenty of reasons to believe it's back on track to the kind of program it's always been, Michigan State has just as many reasons to feel that it's on the same level as its neighbor to the east.

Which means this rivalry may be better than ever before. Throw in the fact that Ohio State isn't eligible for postseason play in 2012, and it might just be the biggest rivalry in the Big Ten right now.
