Cal goes out-of-state again for latest commitment

By Bryan Fischer | Blogger
It's a good year for talent in the state of California but that hasn't stopped Cal from looking beyond the borders for top recruits. The Bears left the state once again for a 2013 prospect on Tuesday, receiving a commitment from Mansfield (Texas) linebacker Chad Whitener.

“We've really been thinking about it hard, my parents and I," Whitener told CalSportsDigest.com. "I've heard a lot of great things about the institution, so I didn't really have any doubts about that. All the new stuff that has been going on with facilities, being in the Pac-12, a program that has turned out a lot of NFL players; I was excited to be a part of it.”

The 6-foot, 210-pounder also held offers from SMU, Rice, Colorado State and Louisiana Tech. Though he hasn't visited campus yet, Whitener is confident that Berkeley is the place for him.

“I'm just so sure and I don't want to pass up the opportunity, so I thought why not?” he said. “It's a great day, finished football practice and might as well cap it off with this.”

Cal is now up to five commitments for the class of 2013, three of whom are from states other than California. Last season Whitener had 130 tackles and four sacks.
