Applicants should send James Franklin a resume, cover letter and photo of their wife

James Franklin jumps around. In his first year as Vanderbilt's head coach, James Franklin stared down an opposing coach and pursued recruits in a helicopter. And just to solidify the fact that he's basically a 40-year-old frat bro making $3 million a year, Franklin proudly admitted in a radio interview Wednesday that he's checking out your wife, too – and judging you accordingly:
Franklin, in a relaxed mood near the beach, explained, "I've been saying it for a long time, I will not hire an assistant coach until I've seen his wife. If she looks the part, and she's a D-1 recruit, then you got a chance to get hired. That's part of the deal.

"There's a very strong correlation between having the confidence, going up and talking to a women, and being quick on your feet and having some personality and confidence and being fun and articulate, than it is walking into a high school and recruiting a kid and selling him."

This has been "Coaching For Bros" with James Franklin. Get the rest of his secrets to attraction and success in his ebook, "Double Your Recruiting," for two installments of $25.99.

Franklin acknowledged the direct line from his theory of human psychology to the old scout's maxim in the movie Moneyball: "Ugly girlfriend means no confidence at the plate." Of course, both the movie and the book that preceded it – which Franklin says he read – exist for the explicit purpose of exposing such folk wisdom as outdated, inefficient and irrelevant to actual performance. (There's an equally persuasive argument that bachelors make better coaches because they're "married to the job.") No need to ruin the fun by making sense. In fact, considering the real value being measured here is an innate ability to woo physically exceptional young adults against intense competition, rigid empirical analysis may be counterproductive. First, you close.

I'd just hate to hear his takeaway from last week's episode of Mad Men.
