Mizzou quarterback James Franklin says he'll start throwing in July

By Jerry Hinnen | College Football Writer

If his latest update is accurate and there's no more setbacks between now and Sept. 1, James Franklin's spring shoulder surgery shouldn't cost him any time on the field.

While helping to rebuild a house in the tornado-stricken city of Joplin, Mo., Franklin told the local Joplin Globe that his rehabilitation from his torn labrum is right on schedule -- and that he should be throwing passes by the time fall camp rolls around.

“I've been throwing a Nerf ball, then toward the middle to the end of July I'll be throwing a football," he said. “We start two-a-days on the first of August. I'm ready for it to come. But I'm still trying to enjoy summer at the same time.”

Franklin had surgery in March after injuring the shoulder falling on a fumble in practice. Though Franklin, team doctors and coach Gary Pinkel have all been confident the rising sophomore would not miss any game time, Pinkel has also been hesitant to issue any guarantees.

But if Franklin has enough faith in the shoulder to say he'll be throwing the football in just a few short weeks (not to mention, you know, help rebuild a house), it seems a safe bet that he'll be on the field when the Tigers open against Southeastern Louisiana (and a near-certainty to be there when Georgia visits in Week 2). The even better news for Tiger fans might be Franklin will be ready to participate in fall two-a-days--a much-needed boost after Franklin missed nearly all of spring camp.

“I only got to practice twice,” he told the Globe.

Franklin wasn't bad at all as a redshirt freshman -- he finished fourth in passer rating in a quarterback-dominated conference, with 981 yards' worth of rushing to boot -- but there's still plenty more preparation necessary for him to lead Missouri into contention in a division as deep as the SEC East. That he appears healthy enough to get that preparation this August is the best news the Tigers could get this offseason this side of Dorial Green-Beckham.
