Boise State leaving the Mountain West

By Tom Fornelli | College Football Writer

It seems Boise State needed every last minute available to it to come to a decision on its future, but with the deadline of July 1 quickly approaching the school has finally come to a resolution.

According to CBSSports.com's Brett McMurphy, Boise State has officially informed the Mountain West that it will be leaving the conference after the 2012-13 school year.

Boise State will have to pay the Mountain West a $2.5 million penalty for leaving, but had it not made its announcement before the deadline that amount would have escalated to $7.5 million.

Brett McMurphy reported in May that Boise State had been reconsidering its decision to leave the Mountain West for the Big East, which the Mountain West confirmed.

The reason behind Boise State's indecision was the uncertainty of where it would place its other sports, along with the changing nature of college football's postseason. Boise State currently keeps its non-football sports in the WAC, but the WAC's future as a Division I conference is in doubt.
