Big East and Syracuse reach an agreement on Syracuse's departure

By Tom Fornelli | Staff Writer

At this time next year Syracuse will be a member of the ACC.

That's the agreement that was announced on Monday by the Big East, Syracuse's current conference. Big East members will vote to terminate Syracuse's contract with the conference on July 1, 2013.

Syracuse will also make a $7.5 million payment to the Big East upon its departure.

“This closes a chapter and opens a new one filled with exciting possibilities for the Big East's future. With the recent addition of eight schools to the Big East, the future for the Conference has never been brighter,” said Big East interim commissioner Joe Bailey in the release.

“We look forward to the new academic and athletic partnerships and the extraordinary competitive opportunities that membership in the ACC offers," said Syracuse athletic director Daryl Gross. "We are excited about both our final season in the Big East and our long-term future with the ACC.”

Of course, while Syracuse's move to the ACC now seems to be resolved, Pittsburgh's departure is yet to be decided. Though you would have to think that this agreement between Syracuse and the Big East sets a pretty clear precedent for what Pitt will have to do if it would like to join the ACC next season.
