PENN STATE WON: It took a couple weeks longer than he'd have liked, but Bill O'Brien finally has his first win as head coach at Penn State. The Nittany Lions jumped out to an early lead against Navy on Saturday in State College and just never took their foot off the gas.
Things weren't really pretty, as the offense managed only 341 yards (Navy had 371) and Matt McGloin completed only 13 of his 21 passes for 231 yards. However, four of McGloin's completions were for touchdowns, so he made them count. The defense also had a strong performance, forcing Navy into committing three turnovers and not allowing Navy to score a touchdown until the fourth quarter when the outcome had long been decided.
WHY PENN STATE WON: It was a mixture of talent and turnovers. For a team like Navy that is at an obvious talent disadvantage, turnovers are absolute killers and Penn State forced three of them on Saturday. A lot of that Penn State talent belongs to receiver Allen Robinson -- five receptions, 136 yards, 3 touchdowns -- who is so good he was able to catch a third-quarter touchdown pass on a ball not even intended for him.
WHEN PENN STATE WON: While things looked comfortable with a 20-0 lead at the half, it was when a pass from McGloin went through the hands of one receiver and bounced right to Allen Robinson all by his lonesome in the end zone to make it 27-0. It was clear after that that everything would be going Penn State's way.
WHAT PENN STATE WON: It's pretty hard to quantify what this win means for Penn State. It's not going to catapult the team to a 10-game win streak to end the season, as there are still holes. After such a tumultuous offseason and a rash of transfers following the NCAA sanctions, it just has to be a wonderful feeling for Penn State players and the new coaching staff to finally have something to celebrate.
WHAT NAVY LOST: Navy doesn't lose anything. Sure, it would have been nice to pick up a win against a Big Ten opponent, but this isn't a game the Midshipmen were expected to win even with Penn State's recent struggles.
THAT WAS CRAZY: Here's video of Robinson's third touchdown grab of the day off a deflection.
