Quick Hits: Oregon State 27, No. 19 UCLA 20

By Chris Huston | College Football Writer

OREGON STATE WON: Sean Mannion threw for a career-high 384 yards to lead Oregon State (2-0) to a 27-20 upset of No. 19 UCLA (3-1) at the Rose Bowl. The Beavers held UCLA's high-powered offense, which was averaging 622 yards per game coming in, to just 434 total yards. UCLA quarterback Brett Hundley threw for 372 yards but couldn't pull the game out for the Bruins. The receiving duo of Markus Wheaton and Brandin Cooks combined for 325 yards and two touchdowns on 15 catches for OSU. This was the second consecutive win over a ranked opponent for the Beavers.

WHY OREGON STATE WON: The Beavers' rush defense came through big time, shutting down the nation's leading rusher, Johnathan Franklin, by holding him to 45 yards on 12 carries. UCLA had just 72 rushing yards and converted only two of 15 third-down attempts. The Beavers have allowed just 107 yards on the ground in their first two games.

WHEN OREGON STATE WON: After UCLA closed the gap to 24-17 on a one-yard Hundley plunge, OSU marched 74 yards in nine plays. That culminated in Trevor Romaine's 17-yard field goal with 9:33 left in the game to put the Beavers up 27-17. Ten points were just too much of a gap for UCLA to overcome.

WHAT OREGON STATE WON: A good dose of respect. The Beavers have all but assured they'll be back in the Top 25 after solid wins against Wisconsin and UCLA. They also served notice to the rest of the league that they'll be contenders in the Pac-12 North.

WHAT UCLA LOST: A chance to start 5-0. The Bruins travel to lowly Colorado next week and should win easily. Instead, they'll be 4-1 and wondering 'What if?' This loss could hurt any chance UCLA has of ending the season with a decent bowl or a Top-25 ranking.
