Iowa State is undefeated after three games, which may or may not still be true after Saturday's Big 12 opener against Texas Tech. But the momentum has held long enough for ISU to introduce Jack Trice Stadium to the afore-linked track, "Comin Thru," the result of an improbable, summer-long collaboration between Cyclones defensive lineman Jake McDonough, the Iowa State drum line and an actual, notable rapper, Tech N9ne. Because what internationally successful hip-hop star hasn't dreamed of keeping it real with Iowa State football?
According to the Des Moines Register, the project began with a conversation McDonough (right) struck up with Tech N9ne's uncle while working security at a concert, which led to a meeting with the rapper himself – a.k.a Aaron Yates, a Kansas City, Mo., native with a string of top-selling albums to his name over the last decade. Last year, McDonough collaborated with a Des Moines-based rapper (that's right) on the Cyclone-inspired track "All In," which Iowa State premiered in Trice Stadium before its BCS-shaking upset over No. 2 Oklahoma State last November. "Comin Thru" will accompany the team onto the field this weekend.
A few sample lyrics:
When I get up with the Cyclones
Opposition's minds blown
Turn the stadium lights on
And fans know the fight song
Throw me the bootleg and I'm gone
Then I take a few steps and I juke left
And the people take a deep breath
And I'm up in your end zone
816 Boyz, we reppin' our connection with Iowa State
Play out of position and it's check mate if you hesitate
You been told offense and defense is dropping the load
On all contenders that pretend to be Cardinal and Gold
"816 Boyz" is a reference to Tech N9ne's group, named for the area code of metro Kansas City. Also repped: Cheerleaders, pom poms, the ISU fight song ("With a will to do or die. Rah! Rah! Rah! Loyal sons forever true…"), the 515 area code in Iowa and, of course, Jack Trice Stadium. You know, the usual crowd-pleasing fare from the man who brought you such family-friendly classics as Sickology 101.
