ACC Poll Reactions, Week 5

By Chip Patterson | College Football/Basketball Writer

This week's polls have been released. Here's how the ACC fared, from the top of the polls to the bottom, and what it means.

(AP/Coaches)

3/4. Florida State

The Seminoles jumped LSU for the third spot in the AP Poll, possibly a result of the Tigers' performance in a 38-22 win over Towson. South Florida gave the top-ranked 'Noles a fight in Tampa on Saturday night, but halftime adjustments from Mark Stoops and the defense shut down their upset chances in the second half. It was not the same wildly impressive beatdowns from the first three weeks, but Florida State did enough to hold its own as a top-5 team on the road.

15/15. Clemson

With Sammy Watkins out sick and reportedly several other players suffering from a similar virus, the Tigers were ripe for upset at Boston College. But even as Chase Rettig lit up the Tigers' secondary for 341 yards passing, the Eagles had no answer for Tajh Boyd and DeAndre Hopkins. "Nuke" set a single-game Clemson record with 197 receiving yards on a game-high 11 receptions. It was the third game that Watkins has missed this season -- the sophomore was suspended for the first two games as a result of a May arrest -- and the Tigers' offense proved again it can keep the well-oiled machine moving in his absence.

Others Receiving Votes: With a 4-1 start that includes three conference wins, Miami is the only other ACC team receiving any attention from the AP voters. Inexplicably, Virginia Tech still received a vote in the Coaches' Poll after its last-minute loss to Cincinnati dropped the Hokies to 3-2.
