Oregon State QB Sean Mannion to have knee surgery

By Tom Fornelli | College Football Writer

The 2012 season has looked like it could be a memorable one for Oregon State, but the Beavers got some bad news on Monday afternoon that could have a major effect on the rest of the campaign.

Coach Mike Riley told a group of reporters that the team's starting quarterback, sophomore Sean Mannion, will undergo knee surgery.

"It's very, very disappointing for the young man. He's invested a ton and he's going to miss some time," said Riley. "He'll be back and he'll be fine."

Obviously, this is a big blow to Oregon State.

The Beavers are off to a 4-0 start, thanks in large part to a passing game that Mannion has led. While the Oregon State offense is averaging only 23.5 points per game, it is eighth in the nation with 339.5 passing yards per game.

Mannion has thrown for 1,358 yards and seven touchdowns in his four games this season.

With Mannion out, junior Cody Vaz will start in his place. Vaz hasn't played since he was a freshman in 2010, completing six of his 17 passes for 48 yards.

"Being the backup, you have to prepare yourself," Vaz said. "You have to have a good mental approach each week, and that's something I've been doing these first four games, is preparing myself like I'm the starter. Now I am, and I'm going to make the most of this opportunity. I'm pretty excited. It has been a while since I've been a starting quarterback."

Oregon State plays BYU in Provo on Saturday.
