BOISE STATE WON. The Broncos captured their seventh consecutive Milk Can Trophy with a 20-10 win over Fresno State, as the old rivals played for the first -- and only -- time as Mountain West Conference foes. Neither team was particularly impressive on offense, but it was Boise State that held the Bulldogs from the end zone until the final minutes and pulled away for the victory.

HOW BOISE STATE WON: Boise State quarterback Joe Southwick completed just 11 of 22 passes, but his job was made much easier thanks to the two-headed rushing attack of sixth-year senior D.J. Harper and freshman Jay Ajayi. Harper and Ajayi combined for 223 yards on 36 carries, helping Boise State maintain possession when the passing game struggled. Fresno State entered the game averaging 39.5 points per game, but Derek Carr and Co. could not get anything started in the first half and punted on their first five possessions of the game.

WHEN BOISE STATE WON: Fresno State made things interesting with its first touchdown of the game after a Boise State missed field goal. The Bulldogs defense forced the kick after Carr's fumble set up the Broncos at the 21-yard line. Fresno State needed to force a punt, but Ajayji and Harper had other plans -- powering forward for first downs and burning out the clock for a Broncos win.

WHAT BOISE STATE WON: A much-needed advantage in the Mountain West Conference title race. The Broncos now hold the advantage over Fresno State, who will likely remain in the conversation for a title in their first year of MW play. It was another encouraging performance for the young Broncos defense, which has delivered several times this season when the offense has sputtered.

WHAT FRESNO STATE LOST: The Bulldogs failed to give their old rivals one last upset before leaving for the Big East. My guess is that the old WAC-turned-MW foes will renew their series in the future, but handing Chris Petersen a loss on the Smurf Turf would have been a signature win for this up-and-coming Fresno State team.
