2013 SEC football conference schedule released

By Chip Patterson | College Football/Basketball Writer

Do not worry, that is not a typo. The SEC released the conference football schedule for next year on Thursday, setting up the cross-division opponents for every team in the 2013 season. With 14 members and just eight conference games, the draw can -- and has -- played a difference in a school's chances at capturing the SEC Championship.

The nine-game conference schedule expected by many will need another year of work, and Mike Slive explained in the press release that 2013 will be a "bridge" year for the league. The eight-game conference schedule for 2013 consists of six games played inside the division and two games against teams from the opposite division, the SEC announced. The scheduling of cross-divisional common opponents, a format previously announced by the conference, will not take place until 2014.

"As we began working on the 2013 football schedule, it became apparent that the conference would need another year of the ‘bridge' schedule to make everything work," Slive said in the release. "I appreciate the SEC transition team and our athletics directors, who came together to put this schedule in place. We look forward to starting with our new scheduling rotation in 2014."
